Mary Hare School Overview

Mary Hare School is a co-educational, non-maintained special school for deaf children and young people, offering day and boarding places from Reception to Year 13, ages 4 to 19. It occupies the Arlington Manor estate, around 120 acres on Snelsmore Common just north of Newbury, Berkshire. The school traces its history to 1883, when Mary Hare opened a school for deaf children in London, and it moved to Arlington Manor in 1949.

Lessons are taught in spoken and written English by qualified Teachers of the Deaf, in acoustically treated classrooms linked by the school's own group hearing aid system. Pupils take GCSEs and can add a qualification in British Sign Language, while the Sixth Form offers A Levels, BTEC courses and technical qualifications.

Boarding at Mary Hare School

Around 200 pupils attend, drawn from some 80 local authorities across the UK, and about three quarters of them board. Primary pupils board Monday to Friday only, while secondary and Sixth Form boarders can also stay at school over weekends, when residential staff run trips and activities. Many pupils go home at weekends, and Ofsted rates the residential care Outstanding.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Houses are arranged by age. Year 7 pupils live in Hillside at Bradbury House, girls in Years 8 to 10 in Adelaide House, boys in Years 8 to 10 in Mansell House, and Year 11 boys and girls together in Murray House. Sixth Formers live in four smaller houses at the Wroughton Centre, each with a lounge and kitchen, and rooms there are a mix of single and twin bedrooms. Every secondary boarder has a keyworker, and waking staff are on duty overnight.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings bring clubs on site and in Newbury, from swimming and yoga to army cadets and cooking, and residents help run the on-site youth club. Weekend trips range from the cinema and shopping to rock climbing, go-karting and theme parks.

Academic and Pastoral Support

An educational audiologist is available daily, and ten speech and language therapists provide individual and group therapy. Specialist staff support dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, autism, visual and physical needs, and a Wellbeing Team, a visiting counsellor and two nurses look after pupils' health.

International boarders at Mary Hare School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Mary Hare School admits deaf pupils from Reception to the Sixth Form, and boarding with weekend stays is available from Year 7, age 11, through to Year 13. Most pupils are funded by UK local authorities, but the school also considers international students, and every applicant is assessed so that the school can confirm it is able to meet their hearing, language and learning needs. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. The school suits deaf students whose families want a specialist, English-speaking setting with audiology and therapy on site. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish minimum English levels for international entry. Pupils join with either English or British Sign Language as their first language, and everyone is immersed in spoken and written English throughout the school day. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Mary Hare School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, so it can sponsor eligible international boarders. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. For deaf students in particular, a guardian who understands their communication needs makes travel, exeats and holidays far easier.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Mary Hare School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Mary Hare School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
