Learn More →Caldicott is an independent boarding and day preparatory school for boys aged 7 to 13 in Farnham Royal, South Buckinghamshire. The school stands in 40 acres of countryside at the edge of Burnham Beeches, centred on a Victorian main house, about 30 minutes by road from west London and around 20 minutes from London Heathrow. Founded in 1904 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, as a preparatory school for The Leys School in Cambridge, it moved to Farnham Royal in 1938.
Boys follow a broad prep school curriculum leading to Common Entrance and scholarship assessments at 13, with an average class size of around 16. Most leavers move on to senior boarding schools such as Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Wellington.
Boarding is no longer compulsory at any age, and around 100 boys, close to half the school, board in some form, most of them on a flexible basis. Weekly boarders stay from Monday to Saturday, full boarders remain in school over the weekend, and flexi boarders stay one to three nights a week for at least half a term. Most boys in Years 7 and 8 board weekly or full time, while younger boys are mainly day pupils.
Boarders sleep in dormitories on the upper floor of the main house. Matrons, nurses and houseparents look after the boys and encourage independence and resilience. Full boarders are the only boys allowed mobile phones, which the matrons keep until a boy asks to call home.
After lessons, boarders have low tea, prep and supper, followed by creative, intellectual and sporting activities, and the evening ends with a hot drink and a book in the snug before lights out. Weekly boarders have a fuller programme through the week, including squash, tennis, croquet and art club. Boys also play fixtures across 12 sports, and more than 180 individual music lessons take place each week.
Caldicott has a small learning support department, and support is mainly delivered through differentiated teaching in class rather than individual lessons. A wellbeing hub and a weekly wellbeing survey underpin the pastoral system, and Chapel is central to school life. Families should discuss individual learning needs with British Guardianship.
International boarders at Caldicott are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Caldicott website.
Most boys join Caldicott in Year 3, with entry in Year 4 and other year groups considered where places allow, and boarding is open to boys from around age 9. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. As a prep school, Caldicott suits families planning a move to a UK senior boarding school at 13. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Caldicott does not publish English language requirements. Around one boy in ten speaks English as an additional language, and a smaller number need extra support with their English. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Caldicott is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through the Caldicott Trust, so it can sponsor eligible boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Caldicott is a member of AEGIS, the body that accredits UK guardianship organisations, and recommends AEGIS accreditation to families choosing a guardian. UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.
For a boy of prep school age, a UK guardian provides an adult point of contact close to school for exeats, half terms and any time away from school. Caldicott's position near London Heathrow makes airport transfers at the start and end of term short and simple to arrange.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Caldicott may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
