Eastbourne College Overview

Eastbourne College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18 in Eastbourne, East Sussex, a short walk from the beach and the town centre. Founded more than 150 years ago, it has a Church of England foundation and around 600 pupils. The school is part of Eastbourne College Incorporated, a charity that has also run St Andrew's Prep, its preparatory school for children aged 9 months to 13, since 2010.

Pupils take GCSEs, with options including Latin and Classical Greek, before choosing from more than 30 A Level subjects in the Sixth Form, which also runs an Oxbridge programme.

Boarding at Eastbourne College

Around 250 pupils board. Alongside full boarding of up to seven nights a week, the College offers Day+, with supper and supervised prep, and Flexi3, giving pupils three boarding nights out of seven. International pupils make up no more than about 20 per cent of the intake, with a cap on numbers from any one country.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Every pupil belongs to one of nine houses of 50 to 70 pupils. Boys board in Gonville, Pennell and Wargrave, and girls board in Nugent and School House, while the remaining houses are for day pupils. Each house is led by a resident housemaster or housemistress with a team of tutors, and the boarding houses also have a resident tutor and a matron. Each house has a common room, games room and kitchen, and around two thirds of the rooms in Nugent are en-suite.

Boarding Life

Evenings follow the same structure for boarders and day pupils, with supper and supervised prep. There are no compulsory lessons at weekends: Saturday mornings offer an optional programme of enrichment, study support and co-curricular activities, followed by sports fixtures and house events in the evening. Sundays are more relaxed, and boarders can explore the coast, the South Downs and the town or join organised trips and paddleboarding.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Enrichment department has six teachers, with specialist training among them in dyslexia, ADHD, autism and anxiety. Pupils with identified needs have an individual education plan, and specialist lessons are taught one-to-one or in very small groups. Tutors share responsibility for each pupil's welfare and progress.

Every international boarder at Eastbourne College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Eastbourne College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Eastbourne College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Eastbourne College's main entry points are Year 9, at age 13, and Year 12, at the start of the Sixth Form, and international boarders are considered for both, with most students joining in September. International places are limited by the College's cap of about 20 per cent of each intake. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Eastbourne College does not publish a minimum IELTS or CEFR score. Applicants with English as an additional language are welcome when they have the aptitude to learn successfully through English, and their level is assessed during admissions. English as an Additional Language lessons are compulsory for international pupils throughout their time at the College, and international Sixth Form students follow a course leading to an IELTS qualification.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Eastbourne College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and sponsored pupils must have their guardianship arrangements in place before they arrive in the UK, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Eastbourne College makes a UK guardian a condition of entry for every pupil whose parents live permanently outside the UK. The guardian must be at least 25, live within two hours' travel of the College and host the pupil during exeats, half terms and other times out of school, and the College recommends an AEGIS or BSA accredited guardianship organisation where families have no suitable relatives or friends in the UK. Guardians also oversee travel plans, including airport transfers at the start and end of each break.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Eastbourne College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Eastbourne College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
