St Andrew's Prep Overview

St Andrew's Prep is an independent, co-educational day and boarding preparatory school in the Meads area of Eastbourne, East Sussex, on the coast, educating children from 9 months to 13 years. The school has a Church of England foundation and around 260 pupils. It is part of Eastbourne College Incorporated, the charity that also runs Eastbourne College, the senior school for pupils aged 13 to 18 in the same town.

In Years 7 and 8, pupils follow The Bridge Curriculum, which combines Common Entrance, the National Curriculum and other programmes of study, before moving on to senior school at 13. Boarding is available from Year 3, at age 7, to Year 8.

Boarding at St Andrew's Prep

Children can board full time, seven nights a week, weekly from Monday to Friday, or flexibly for one to three nights a week or on occasional nights. Boarders from more than 14 countries have attended in recent years, living alongside local children. The boarding house takes up to 60 children on any one night.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in Colstocks, the school's recently refurbished boarding house. Rooms are spacious and light, and each child has their own personal space. The house is run by a resident house leader who lives on site with her family, supported by a residential house tutor, a residential senior nurse and gap year students.

Boarding Life

Evenings include supervised prep time, and the school runs a weekend programme of activities and trips for boarders. The school arranges assisted transfers to Gatwick and Heathrow at the start and end of each term and half term, and a Sunday evening minibus from Clapham Junction and Tunbridge Wells returns pupils after exeat weekends.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Class teachers lead pastoral care in Years 3 and 4, and form tutors take over from Year 5 as the link between home and school, overseen by a pastoral team in which senior staff lead boarding, wellbeing and learning support, alongside a school counsellor and the school nurse. Pupils can also use The Snug, a wellbeing space staffed by trained adults. Pupils whose first language is not English can take specialist EAL lessons in place of a modern language.

International boarders at St Andrew's Prep are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

St Andrew's Prep accepts boarders from Year 3, at age 7, to Year 8, and international pupils are considered across these year groups. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Every overseas pupil is assessed on arrival and receives extra English lessons tailored to their needs, with recommendations shared with parents through their agent or guardian. Specialist EAL lessons can replace French in the timetable.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. St Andrew's Prep is covered by the licence held by Eastbourne College, a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, with both schools run by Eastbourne College Incorporated. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. For younger boarders, the guardian plays a central role in arranging travel around the school's assisted airport transfers and providing a home during exeats and half terms.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for St Andrew's Prep boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at St Andrew's Prep, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with St Andrew's Prep is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St Andrew's Prep may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
