Learn More →Embley is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 2 to 18, set on a 130-acre estate at Embley Park, near Romsey in Hampshire, on the edge of the New Forest. The estate was once Florence Nightingale's family home, and the school opened there in 1946; it was known as Hampshire Collegiate School until 2019. The school is part of United Learning, a national group of independent schools and academies.
Pupils progress from the Nursery through the Prep School to the Senior School and Sixth Form on one site. Seniors work towards GCSEs, and international students aged 15 or 16 can take a one-year pre-A Level programme. Sixth formers choose from 24 A Level subjects and two Level 3 BTEC Diplomas, with the Extended Project Qualification also offered.
Boarding starts in Year 7, with full, weekly and flexi options. Full boarders live in the house seven days a week, and the school does not run exeat weekends. Weekly boarders go home at weekends, and flexi boarders keep their own bed in the house.
Boarders live in the Manor House at the centre of the school, which has space for 70 students. Resident Heads of Boarding lead a team of boarding tutors, supported by nurses and a matron, and a member of the house team is also part of the EAL team. Room types are not published, and room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Boarders eat dinner together before supervised prep, then choose from baking, games, crafts or the sports hall, gym and tennis courts. Saturdays often include shopping trips to Southampton or Winchester, while Sundays bring swimming, cinema, horse riding, paintballing or paddleboarding. Longer excursions have included Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford and the Harry Potter studio tour.
A special educational needs coordinator ensures teachers take account of pupils' identified learning needs. Pastoral care is shared between Heads of Year, tutors, boarding staff, matrons and a school counsellor, and personal development lessons run in a Wellbeing Hub. Sixth formers have study pods, a common room, daily tutor contact and guidance on university and apprenticeship applications.

British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Embley sets minimum English levels for each entry point, based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
International students receive English as an Additional Language lessons matched to their individual needs, together with extra English classes taught in small groups of mixed nationalities.

Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Embley requires every boarder whose parents live overseas to have a UK resident guardian living within 90 minutes' travelling time of the school, a rule that also applies to students over 18. The school is a member of AEGIS, the accrediting body for UK guardianship organisations.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
