Learn More →Eton College is an independent boarding school for boys aged 13 to 18 in Eton, Berkshire, on the north bank of the River Thames opposite Windsor. Founded by King Henry VI in 1440, it educates around 1,350 boys, all of whom board. The estate covers some 1,600 acres, including around 200 acres of playing fields, the Dorney Lake rowing course and a 700-seat auditorium.
Boys join in Year 9, known at Eton as F Block, and work towards GCSEs before taking A Levels in the Sixth Form, which also admits a small number of new pupils at 16. The school year runs in three terms, called halves: Michaelmas, Lent and Summer.
Eton is a full boarding school, and every boy belongs to one of 25 boarding houses throughout his time there. Boys go home every two or three weeks, for a Short Leave weekend or for Long Leave at half term, and parents often attend sport, music and drama events.
Each house is home to no more than 55 boys, about 11 in each year group, and every boy has his own room from his first day. Twenty-four houses are for Oppidans, while College houses the 70 King's Scholars. A House Master and a Dame share responsibility for each boy's welfare, with the Dame handling routine medical matters, and older boys help new F Block pupils settle in.
Each evening includes house prayers and a quiet hour of around 75 minutes for private study. On Sundays, boys attend Chapel, where those of other faiths receive instruction from their own faith tutors, and Roman Catholic Mass is also held. Parents can take their sons out on Sunday afternoons.
Every boy has a personal Tutor who oversees his academic progress and study habits. The Learning Support Centre, staffed by the SENCo, a specialist assessor and four teachers, helps boys with specific learning difficulties, executive functioning and handwriting, and manages exam access arrangements. The Health Centre has three doctors and five nurses, counsellors work from the Stephenson Centre for Wellbeing, and Anglican and Roman Catholic chaplains work alongside Jewish, Muslim and Hindu tutors.
Every international boarder at Eton College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Eton College website.
Eton College admits international boys at two points: Year 9 at age 13, the main entry, and the Sixth Form at 16, where around 20 places are offered each year to boys from UK independent and overseas schools. All new boys start in September, at the beginning of the Michaelmas half. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Eton does not publish a minimum English level by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The school's whole-school learning support approach covers English as an Additional Language as well as special educational needs.
Boys who do not hold a British or Irish passport need a Child Student visa to take up their place. Eton College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and its Admissions Office issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, with a new one prepared ahead of Sixth Form study. The school answers questions about the process but does not give immigration advice, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Eton requires a UK guardian for every boy whose permanent home is outside the UK, including boys whose parents live in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man or travel abroad regularly. The guardian must be a UK-based adult over 21 who speaks fluent English and has permission to remain in the UK while the boy is at Eton, and a university student living in halls is not usually suitable. The school refers families to AEGIS when looking for a guardian.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Eton College boys. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, leave weekends and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Eton College's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.
Whenever your child cannot stay at Eton College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Eton College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Eton College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
