Learn More →Glenalmond College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 12 to 18, set on a 300-acre estate in Perthshire on the edge of the Scottish Highlands, about 13 miles from Perth. Founded in 1847 by William Gladstone, later Prime Minister, the College is an Episcopalian foundation with its own chapel.
Glenalmond follows the English examination system. Pupils take a broad curriculum in the Second and Third Forms and sit GCSEs in the Fourth and Fifth Forms. Sixth Formers choose three of more than 20 A Levels, with an Extended Project Qualification or a Higher in French or Spanish, and BTEC courses such as Countryside Management are also offered.
Boarding is at the centre of College life, and most pupils board full time on a seven-day programme. Around a fifth of pupils come from overseas, and houses deliberately mix nationalities, ages and interests. Boarders who stay on campus over the few Leave Out weekends each term can join trips and activities.
Five boarding houses share the campus: Patchell's, Skrine's and Reid's for boys, and Lothian and Home for girls. Pupils stay in one house throughout their time at Glenalmond, with day pupils attached alongside the boarders. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress who lives in with their family, and has lounges, kitchens, games rooms and prep rooms. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Saturday morning lessons are followed by afternoon options and sports fixtures. Sundays bring outings that use the Perthshire setting, from climbing Munros and kayaking on the River Tay to theatre trips and visits to V&A Dundee, while house life adds quiz nights, themed dinners and ceilidhs.
The Support for Learning department offers one-to-one sessions, small group work and classroom strategies agreed with teachers and house staff, and coordinates examination access arrangements; the Good Schools Guide reports support for dyslexia and dyspraxia. A Wellbeing Lead oversees pastoral strategy, older pupils can join a peer support programme, and a 24-hour on-site Medical Centre is staffed by nurses with physical and mental health expertise. Sixth Formers have a collegiate-style Sixth Form Centre.

Glenalmond College accepts international boarders from age 12, when pupils join the Second Form, through to the Sixth Form. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. The College can arrange transfers to and from Edinburgh Airport and Perth railway station. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
International pupils need at least an intermediate level of English on arrival so that they can follow the normal curriculum, and a diagnostic assessment then sets their level, teaching group and support. From the Third to the Fifth Form, English as an Additional Language can replace French or Spanish as a timetabled option. Pupils can be entered for Cambridge English examinations on request, IELTS is offered from age 16, and pupils may sit GCSE or A Level English, or English as a Second Language, according to their level.
Glenalmond College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register. Once a place has been accepted, the College helps families with visa requirements through an immigration specialist regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Glenalmond College requires every pupil whose parents live outside the UK to have a UK guardian, and the rule still applies after a pupil turns 18. The school recommends a guardian aged at least 25 who lives within reasonable reach, and asks families without a suitable relative or friend to use an AEGIS accredited organisation, which its policy makes a requirement for student visa holders. Guardians host pupils during half terms and Leave Out weekends and visit if a pupil is unwell.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Glenalmond College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
