Strathallan School Overview

Strathallan School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school at Forgandenny, near Perth in Perthshire, educating pupils aged 5 to 18 on a campus of around 153 acres. Strathallan Prep School shares the site, and the Senior School runs from the Third Form, the equivalent of Year 9, to the Sixth Form. The school was founded in 1913 and is non-denominational.

Strathallan combines English and Scottish qualifications. Most pupils take nine GCSEs in the Fourth and Fifth Forms. In the Sixth Form, students choose between A Levels and Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers, with the Extended Project Qualification also available.

Boarding at Strathallan School

Boarding is central to the school, which runs seven days a week with Saturday lessons and Sunday activities. Boarders come from Scotland, the rest of the UK and overseas, with international pupils from countries including Germany, China and Spain. Junior boarders can choose full boarding or flexi boarding of one to three nights a week, and the school also offers term-time immersion stays for international students.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Prep boarders from Year 3 live in Riley House. Senior pupils join one of seven houses: Freeland, Nicol, Ruthven and Simpson for boys, and Glenbrae, Thornbank and Woodlands for girls. Every senior girl boarder has a single study bedroom, and boys have single rooms from the Fourth Form. Each house is led by a resident Housemaster or Housemistress, with a Matron, house tutors and a domestic team, and houses have year-group common rooms and kitchens.

Boarding Life

After lessons end, pupils have free time in their houses before dinner, followed by supervised prep from 7.30pm to 9pm, with tutors on hand to help. Saturday mornings are given to lessons and afternoons to sports fixtures. Sundays bring Chapel and outings to places such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews and Stirling.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Pupils are screened on entry, and qualified learning support staff work one-to-one, in small groups and in class with pupils who have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, or autism spectrum conditions. Access arrangements are made under both the English and Scottish exam systems. Academic tutors meet each tutee at least once a week, and nurses in the Health Centre support house staff.

Every international boarder at Strathallan School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Strathallan School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Strathallan School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Strathallan School accepts international boarders into the Fourth Form for the two-year GCSE course, into the Fifth Form where suitable, and into the Sixth Form for A Levels or Scottish Highers. Younger international pupils can board in the Prep School from Year 3. Most international students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. An EAL department supports pupils whose first language is not English, and the school runs an English Pathways Programme for students aged 13 to 16, which develops English while introducing pupils to British boarding life.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Strathallan School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and its visa team introduces families to a specialist adviser who checks documents at each stage. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Strathallan asks every international student to name a UK-based guardian before joining. The guardian acts as the school's emergency contact and looks after the pupil when they need to leave school, including short half-term breaks. The guardian need not live in Scotland, although the school notes that a Scottish guardian can be easier.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Strathallan School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Strathallan offers immersion stays in which international pupils live as full boarders during term time, following the school timetable, Saturday lessons and the Sunday activity programme. Stays can be shaped around academic, sporting, arts or cultural interests, and students can join at any point in the year. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Strathallan School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Strathallan School is finalised. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Strathallan School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
