Learn More →Ipswich High School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school at Woolverstone, near Ipswich in Suffolk, for pupils aged 3 to 18. Its single campus is the 87-acre Woolverstone Hall estate on the banks of the River Orwell, about five miles from Ipswich, whose station has direct trains to London, Cambridge and Norwich.
Founded in 1878 as a girls' school in Ipswich, the school moved to Woolverstone Hall in the early 1990s, left the Girls' Day School Trust in 2017, when it changed proprietor, and became fully co-educational in 2018. Pupils take GCSEs and then A Levels in the Sixth Form, where the Extended Project Qualification is also offered.
Boarding is available from Year 7 in a small community of around 40 boarders, most of them international students. Options are full boarding, weekly boarding from Sunday evening to Friday, or flexible boarding. Full boarders keep their own bed space for the whole academic year, with round-the-clock care from residential staff.
Boarders live in two houses on the estate, about ten minutes' walk from the main school. The Dairy, a renovated Grade II listed building that opened for boarding in 2019, has single and twin rooms, a kitchen and living spaces. The Barns, newly built and opened in 2021, has single and twin en-suite rooms, an open-plan social area, a kitchen, a cinema room and a quiet room. Live-in staff and resident graduates provide care around the clock.
Evenings include prep time, with staff and older pupils on hand to help, and a Boarding Enrichment programme planned by staff and pupil leaders. With no Saturday school, Saturdays bring local activities or full-day trips to places such as Cambridge, London, Southwold and the Harry Potter studios, while Sundays are kept for rest, sport and homework. Boarders can also use the indoor pool, fitness suite and tennis courts.
The Good Schools Guide records support for pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, autism and social, emotional and mental health needs. Pastoral care is organised through tutor groups, and an EAL department helps pupils with English as an additional language, in lessons and in settling in.
Every international boarder at Ipswich High School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Ipswich High School website.
Ipswich High School accepts boarders from age 11, so international students can join from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form. Most international students join in September, and entry in other year groups is considered individually. Boarders, most of whom come from overseas, study alongside day pupils drawn largely from Suffolk and north Essex. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Applicants with English as an additional language take an English test when they apply, and certified results from a recognised test can also be submitted. For entry to Year 10 and above, including the Sixth Form, the school asks for a minimum of CEFR B2. No fixed level is published for younger entrants, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
The EAL department identifies language needs early and gives academic and pastoral support, including help adjusting to life in a new country.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Ipswich High School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies for the application. Sponsored pupils without a UK passport who stay for more than three months receive specialist visa support through a provider appointed by the school, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Ipswich High School requires every international pupil to have a legal guardian. Parents of boarders who live outside the UK, including those of boarders over 18, must appoint a UK guardian or guardianship organisation with legal authority to act on their behalf. Guardianship organisations must be approved by AEGIS, and the school does not appoint guardians itself.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Ipswich High School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Ipswich High School is finalised. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Ipswich High School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
