Lord Wandsworth College Overview

Lord Wandsworth College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18 in Long Sutton, near Hook in north Hampshire. Just over 700 pupils share a 1,200-acre rural campus around an hour from London. The college grew from a bequest left by Lord Wandsworth in 1912 to educate children who had lost one or both parents, and the first Foundationers arrived in 1922.

Pupils follow a broad curriculum to GCSE, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC courses.

Boarding at Lord Wandsworth College

More than half of pupils board, with around 390 boarders, and international students from many countries live alongside British boarders. Every house offers full, weekly and flexi boarding as well as day places.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are eight boarding houses. First and Second Form pupils live together in Bramley House, a co-educational junior house. From Third Form to Upper Sixth, pupils join one of seven single-sex houses: School House, Sutton, Summerfield and Hazelvere for boys, and Park, Haygate and Gosden for girls, where vertical boarding means pupils aged 13 to 18 live side by side. Younger pupils share rooms of up to six, while sixth formers have individual bedrooms. Each house is led by a Houseparent with Assistant Houseparents, Tutors and Matrons.

Boarding Life

Evenings combine shared meals, study and house activities, with staff on hand to help with schoolwork. Each house runs its own programme of movie nights, barbecues and off-site trips, and the evening and weekend programme covers creative, sporting and cultural activities. Boarders take day trips to London museums, theatres and landmarks, and inter-house events such as House Dance, House Song, Sports Day and cross-country bring the college together.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Curriculum Support department is based in the Summercombe Centre, a learning space with teaching pods, a group training area and a sensory garden. Support ranges from adapted classroom teaching to small group and one-to-one sessions in English, maths, science and study skills, with clear routines for pupils with autism, ADHD or anxiety-related needs. Every pupil also has a personal tutor.

Every international boarder at Lord Wandsworth College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Lord Wandsworth College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Lord Wandsworth College welcomes international boarders, and its main entry points are First Form (Year 7), Third Form (Year 9) and the Sixth Form. International pupils live in one of the eight boarding houses, supported by a Houseparent, a Matron and a personal tutor. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

All international applicants complete an English language assessment. For Sixth Form entry, the typical minimum is equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or above, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for other years of entry during placement. Pupils who need further support are taught by an EAL specialist within the Curriculum Support department, in small groups or one-to-one, and can work towards the IGCSE in English as a Second Language in Fourth and Fifth Form and IELTS in the Sixth Form.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Lord Wandsworth College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international pupils, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Lord Wandsworth College requires every pupil whose parents live outside the UK to have a UK-based guardian accredited by AEGIS or the BSA. A close friend or relative acting as guardian must meet the AEGIS quality standards for guardianship organisations. The guardian must be contactable and able to accommodate the pupil in an emergency and whenever the college is closed, including half terms and exeat weekends.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Lord Wandsworth College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the college, travel coordination through Heathrow and Southampton airports and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.
