Sherfield School Overview

Sherfield School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Sherfield-on-Loddon, near Hook in north Hampshire, for pupils aged 3 months to 18 years. Its 76-acre campus of parkland and woodland surrounds a listed heritage building between Basingstoke and Reading. Since September 2023 the school has been part of Education in Motion (EiM), an international group of schools founded in Shanghai.

Pupils follow the National Curriculum to Year 9 before taking GCSEs over two years. In the Sixth Form, students choose from A Levels, BTEC courses and the International Advanced Diploma, and A Level students can add the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Sherfield School

Boarding is open from Year 5, at age 9, through to the Sixth Form, and there are around 50 boarders from the UK and overseas. Families can choose full boarding for the whole term, weekly boarding from Monday to Friday, or flexi boarding on set nights. Full boarders stay at school at weekends and go home for half terms and holidays.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in Archer's Lodge, which has separate wings for boys and girls. Every bedroom is en-suite, with a bed, storage, a study area and internet access, and each floor has a common room with living, dining and kitchen space, opening onto a terrace. Boarding staff supervise the house, and new boarders receive an induction on arrival.

Boarding Life

The boarding day combines lessons, activities, meals, evening study time and free time, with study periods for Sixth Formers. Evenings and weekends bring trips and activities alongside downtime, and boarders can walk into the village in small groups. From Year 9, boarders may sign out on Wednesday afternoons and at weekends, and a shuttle links weekly boarders with Basingstoke station, which has trains to London Waterloo every 15 minutes. Sixth Formers can take up Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Model United Nations.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A learning support and inclusion team provides early, targeted help, including one-to-one or small group sessions for specific learning difficulties, reading programmes and classroom support from assistants in core subjects. A pastoral team offers counselling and mentoring. Sixth Formers receive individual guidance on university, apprenticeship and career options.

International boarders at Sherfield School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Sherfield School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Sherfield School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Sherfield School accepts international boarders from Year 5, at age 9, through to the Sixth Form. For boarding ages, the main entry points are Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12; Year 10 applications are considered individually, and places in Years 11 and 13 are rarely available. Admissions are rolling, so applications are welcomed throughout the year, although most year groups have limited places and most international students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Sherfield School does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR levels. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Specialist EAL teachers give tailored English lessons to students who need them, and each new international pupil is paired with a buddy to help them settle in.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Sherfield School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and welcomes pupils of all nationalities. The school offers help with visa applications as part of its support for international students, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. The school is under an hour from both Heathrow and Gatwick, so airport transfers at the start and end of term and at half terms are short.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Sherfield School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Sherfield School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Sherfield School is finalised. Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Sherfield School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
