RGS Surrey Hills Overview

RGS Surrey Hills is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18, set in countryside at Mickleham, near Dorking in Surrey. Formerly Box Hill School, it is now part of the Reigate Grammar School Group. The school was shaped by the educational ideas of Kurt Hahn and is a founding member of Round Square, the international association of schools, which still informs its outdoor and international outlook.

Most pupils take nine GCSEs, then choose between A Levels, which include BTEC options, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the Sixth Form. Dorking station, about five minutes away, has direct trains to London in under an hour, and Gatwick and Heathrow are each around half an hour away by road.

Boarding at RGS Surrey Hills

The school has more than 100 boarders, with students from over 35 countries, and aims for around a third of pupils to be international students. Families can choose full boarding, weekly boarding with weekends at home, or flexi boarding for a minimum of two nights a week booked each term.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in six main houses, arranged by age and gender. Each house is run by resident Houseparents, supported by Assistant Houseparents, who are available around the clock to help pupils settle and to look after them when unwell. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Evenings include supervised study time, and house staff organise meals out, pizza nights, quizzes and games evenings. Organised Sunday trips are part of the boarding programme, with destinations such as Oxford, Brighton, Bletchley Park, the Shard and ice skating at Somerset House. Facilities include a sports centre, music school, high ropes course and climbing wall.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every pupil has a tutor in a mixed-age tutor group, and boarders also have a Houseparent. The learning support team, led by a SENCo, provides one-to-one sessions with specialist teachers in literacy, study skills or maths, plus speech and language therapy and in-class support in Years 7 to 11. The Sixth Form Centre has its own common room and study areas, with guidance on UK and international university applications.

International boarders at RGS Surrey Hills are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

RGS Surrey Hills accepts international students into Years 7 to 11 and into the Sixth Form in Years 12 and 13, with most pupils joining at 11+, 13+ or 16+ in September. Places in other year groups and mid-year entry are considered individually. Students aged around 15 can also join a One Year GCSE Programme, taking up to six GCSEs while building their English and preparing for Sixth Form study, and an International Study Centre caters for overseas students in Years 10 to 12. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The One Year GCSE Programme and the International Study Centre are designed for students who need to raise their CEFR level before or alongside mainstream study.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. RGS Surrey Hills is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the school works with a specialist immigration firm that handles the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies and guides families through the paperwork once a place is accepted. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

RGS Surrey Hills asks that guardians for international students are accredited to gold standard by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association. The school does not publish a distance or minimum age rule, and British Guardianship confirms the school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for RGS Surrey Hills boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. RGS Surrey Hills may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
