Learn More →St Teresa's Effingham is an independent Catholic day and boarding school for girls aged 7 to 18 on a 55-acre hilltop site at Effingham, Surrey, between Leatherhead and Guildford. Founded in 1928, the school is part of the Effingham Schools Trust, a local group of independent schools that also includes Cranmore and Manor House. Girls are taught in single-sex classes through the prep and senior years, and the Sixth Form, known as Effingham Sixth Form, is co-educational.
Girls take GCSEs and then A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification also available. Sixth formers are based in the Felstead Centre, a dedicated building, and facilities include a 25m indoor pool and equestrian facilities. Boarding is open to girls only; boys join the Sixth Form as day students.
The boarding community has room for up to 85 girls from Year 7 upwards, and roughly 60 board at any one time, most as full boarders. Full, weekly (Monday to Friday), flexi and occasional boarding are offered, subject to availability. Around 15 per cent of pupils come from outside the UK, and the school limits the number of girls from any single country.
Boarders live together in the school's boarding house, where girls are cared for by resident boarding staff. Year 9 boarders share bedrooms with two or three others, Year 10 boarders share with one other girl or have a single room, and from Year 11 each boarder has her own study bedroom.
Boarding follows a clear but flexible routine, with evenings organised to give girls a structured setting for homework and revision. At weekends the boarding team runs trips and outings, along with parties and barbecues.
The learning support team works with close to 100 girls across the prep and senior school, through one-to-one lessons, help with study and planning skills, and tools such as reading pens. Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and autism spectrum conditions are supported, with exam access arrangements where assessment shows a need. A pupil-led wellbeing hub gives senior girls a calm, quiet space.

St Teresa's Effingham accepts girls as boarders from Year 7, and international students can join the senior school or the co-educational Sixth Form, where boarding remains open to girls. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. Because the school caps the number of girls from any one country, the overseas intake is spread across many nationalities. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The school does not publish minimum test scores by year group. Many overseas girls choose St Teresa's partly to perfect their English while following GCSE or A Level courses.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. St Teresa's Effingham is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through the Effingham Schools Trust, which holds the licence for both the Child Student and Student routes and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is confirmed. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St Teresa's Effingham may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
