Learn More →Sandroyd School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day preparatory school for children aged 2 to 13 at Rushmore, near Tollard Royal, in the Wiltshire countryside south west of Salisbury. It has a Nursery, a Pre-Prep known as The Walled Garden and a Prep School, set among parkland, woodland and playing fields. Sandroyd was founded in 1888 at Cobham in Surrey and later moved to Wiltshire.
Prep pupils are prepared for the ISEB examinations used by many senior schools, and almost all stay until 13 before moving on to senior boarding schools such as Marlborough, Sherborne, Sherborne Girls, Bryanston, Radley and Eton.
More than 130 pupils board, close to nine in ten of the Prep School, and around 95 are full boarders. Children can board from Year 3, and pupils in Years 7 and 8 are encouraged, though not required, to board. Full, weekly and flexi boarding are offered. Boarders may go home after Saturday games, but around 75 usually stay in at weekends, and the school closes for exeat weekends, usually two each term.
All boarders live in the main school building, divided into three houses. Rockies House is for boys and girls in Years 3 to 6, with a shared common room. Atlas House is for boys and Alaska House for girls in Years 7 and 8. Dormitories sleep up to eight, and each house is run by houseparents with matrons, gap students and teachers on evening duty.
Evenings leave time for games, table tennis and reading, and each house has phone lines and an iPad for video calls with parents abroad. Phones and tablets are not used at weekends. Activities include bike and pony rides through the woods, boat building, cookery, swimming and sport, while Sundays bring trips to ice skating, bowling or theme parks and a roast lunch.
A specialist Learning Support department, staffed by teachers trained in dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties, gives individual lessons in literacy, numeracy and study skills. The Good Schools Guide also records support for needs including autism, speech and language difficulties and social, emotional and mental health needs. Houseparents, tutors and matrons share pastoral care.
Every international boarder at Sandroyd School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Sandroyd School website.
Sandroyd School welcomes international boarders from Year 3, at age 7, to Year 8, at age 12. Some pupils join for a single academic year, while others spend four or five years at the school before moving on to UK senior schools at 13. The school limits the number of pupils of any one nationality in each year group, and places for some nationalities fill well in advance. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Sandroyd does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. English as an Additional Language tuition is given individually or in small groups, covering reading, writing, speaking and listening, together with language support for other subjects.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Sandroyd School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor international pupils on this route, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Sandroyd requires an educational guardian in the UK for every pupil whose parents live abroad. The guardian should live within about two hours of the school so that a child can be collected promptly if unwell, and families without UK relatives are pointed towards AEGIS, the accrediting body for guardianship organisations. The school runs escorted travel to London Heathrow and London Waterloo at the start and end of term, at half terms and at exeat weekends.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Sandroyd School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Sandroyd School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.
Whenever your child cannot stay at Sandroyd School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Sandroyd School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Sandroyd School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
