Stowe School Overview

Stowe School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school at Stowe, near Buckingham in Buckinghamshire, for pupils aged 13 to 18. Founded in 1923, it occupies Stowe House and its historic estate, whose landscape gardens the school gave to the National Trust in 1989. Girls joined the Sixth Form in 1974 and the school became fully co-educational in 2003. Stowe is part of the Stowe Group, alongside three preparatory schools.

Pupils take GCSEs over three years from the Third Form, followed by A Levels in the Sixth Form, with entry at 13+, 14+ and 16+.

Boarding at Stowe School

Most pupils board, and around a fifth of the school community lives abroad. Stowe offers full boarding, weekly boarding and flexi boarding of up to three nights a week, alongside day places. Each term has two in weekends when all pupils stay at school; on other weekends boarders may go home after Saturday matches, and those who remain join the Sunday activity programme.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Every pupil belongs to one of 16 houses of around 60 members, nine for boys and seven for girls. Winton, Croft and Cheshire are day houses, and the rest are boarding houses with a limited number of flexi places. Most houses span all five year groups, while West is a girls' house for the Sixth Form only, with a purpose-built wing of 23 en-suite rooms. Each house is run by Houseparents with an Assistant Houseparent, an Under Houseparent and a Matron.

Boarding Life

Saturday mornings are given to lessons and afternoons to sports fixtures, while Sundays follow a programme of activities for boarders. The International Society hosts cultural events, and trips to London, Edinburgh and the coast are offered. Evenings include supervised study time in the houses.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Academic Skills Department makes sure teachers know about any difficulty affecting a pupil's learning. Pupils with special educational needs can attend small-group sessions up to three times a week, Learning Support Assistants work in lessons, and Sixth Form students can add individual study skills sessions. Pastoral care rests on the house system and the PSHE programme, with an in-house therapy service and a Health Centre.

Every international boarder at Stowe School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Stowe School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Stowe School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Stowe School admits international boarders at 13+ into the Third Form, at 14+ and at 16+ into the Lower Sixth, with entry in September at the start of the Michaelmas Term. New international pupils follow an induction programme and are paired with a peer buddy. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Stowe does not publish minimum English scores by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The EAL Department assesses each new pupil whose first language is not English. Younger pupils can take English for Academic Purposes courses, some sit the IGCSE in English as a Second Language, and Sixth Form students are prepared for IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent qualifications where universities require them.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Stowe School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once it holds a copy of the pupil's passport. GCSE and A Level count as separate courses, so a new visa is needed before the Sixth Form. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Stowe requires parents living outside the UK to appoint a UK education guardian for each child, whatever the pupil's age. The guardian must live within reasonable reach of the school, keep in regular contact with the pupil, take responsibility when the pupil is unwell or away from school, and provide accommodation at exeats and holidays. The school prefers an AEGIS member organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Stowe School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Stowe School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Stowe School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Stowe School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Stowe School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
