Learn More →Swanbourne House School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding preparatory school in the village of Swanbourne, near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, for children aged 3 to 13. The school dates from 1920, when its founders brought 43 boys from Bradfield College to Swanbourne House. It admitted its first girls in 1979. Since 2021 the school has been part of the Stowe Group, which links it with Stowe School and two other preparatory schools.
Pupils join from the pre-reception class and stay to the end of Year 8. Classes are small, and the curriculum includes Latin, modern languages, computing, design and technology, music and drama alongside the core subjects. Most pupils move on after Year 8 to boarding schools within an hour's travel, with Stowe the most frequent destination.
Boarding starts in Year 3, and around 70 boys and girls board. Families can choose full boarding for seven nights a week, weekly boarding from Monday to Friday or flexi boarding for occasional stays. Boarders come from the UK and overseas, including pupils from China, Thailand, Spain and Japan.
Boarders live in the Boarding House within the Main House, with boys' dormitories on the first floor and girls' dormitories on the second. Staff live on each floor. Shared facilities include a sitting room that doubles as a cinema room, a snug, a games lounge, a private telephone box for calls home and the school's Wellbeing Hub.
At weekends boarders join the Saturday Enrichment Programme, and full boarders stay in school across the weekend with resident staff. Evenings include supervised study time, and the school runs a weekend programme of activities and trips for boarders.
Pastoral care is shared by class teachers, tutors, houseparents and the School Nurse, who is available every day and spends one extended evening a week in the Boarding House. The Wellbeing Hub, staffed by trained Mental Health First Aiders, offers a quiet space at break times, and PSHE workshops cover emotional literacy, resilience and healthy habits. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

Swanbourne House School welcomes pupils from overseas, and boarding is open to international pupils from Year 3 to Year 8. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. Pupils who complete Year 8 can continue to Stowe School within the same group, a route many Swanbourne families choose. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Swanbourne House does not publish details of English as an additional language teaching, so any language support a younger child may need is best discussed with British Guardianship at the start of the placement process.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Swanbourne House School sponsors this visa through the Stowe Group, whose licence on the UKVI register of Child Student sponsors is held by Stowe School Limited, and the school guides families through the visa requirements. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. A pupil moving from Swanbourne House to Stowe at 13 starts a new course and needs a new visa. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Swanbourne House School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
