Learn More →Sutton Valence School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Sutton Valence, near Maidstone in Kent, educating pupils from 2 to 18 across two sites. The Nursery and Prep School are based at Chart Sutton, while the Senior School, Sixth Form and boarding houses occupy a rural campus in Sutton Valence, around 800 metres away. Founded in 1576 by William Lambe, a London clothworker, the school is part of the United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation, a charitable foundation that oversees a family of schools.
Boarding is available for boys and girls from age 11. Pupils take GCSEs and then A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification offered in the Sixth Form.
Around 125 pupils board, choosing between full, weekly and flexi boarding. Weekly boarding is the most popular option, alongside a smaller group of full boarders who stay in school at weekends. Staff receive cultural awareness training to help international boarders settle, and the houses mark occasions such as Chinese New Year.
Boys board in St Margaret's and girls in Westminster House, two long-established senior houses whose refurbishment was nominated for a Boarding Schools' Association award. Younger pupils usually share bedrooms, while older pupils move into single rooms. Each house has common rooms and a fully equipped kitchen, and meals are served in the Refectory. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress, supported by tutors and a matron.
Weekday evenings combine supervised prep, with subject teachers available for guidance, and social time, house events and supervised use of the school's facilities, including a heated indoor pool, floodlit pitches and a sports centre with a gym. At weekends, house staff run a programme that balances activity and rest, with trips to local attractions, theatres, cinemas, ice skating and trampolining, alongside sports fixtures and quieter time in the house.
A learning support team of a SENCo and three assistants runs a rolling screening programme to identify needs and supports pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Pastoral care is organised through vertical tutor groups that mix year groups, with wellbeing taught through PSHE.

Sutton Valence School accepts boarders from age 11, and the main entry points for international students are First Form (Year 7), Third Form (Year 9) and Lower Sixth (Year 12). Other year groups are considered when places are available, and most international students join in September. Short-term places of less than a year may also be available. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils whose first language is not English receive tailored EAL support, taking EAL lessons in place of First Language English and sitting the IGCSE in English as an Additional Language instead of English Language and Literature. Where possible, new pupils are linked with a member of staff who speaks their language.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Sutton Valence School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and guides families through the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies needed for the visa, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Sutton Valence School requires pupils whose parents live outside the UK to have a suitable UK guardian, who should live no more than two hours' drive from the school, be over 25 and not be a full-time student. The guardian acts as a 24-hour point of contact, provides care during exeats, half terms and holidays, and holds delegated parental authority in an emergency. The school is a member of AEGIS and strongly recommends families use an AEGIS accredited guardianship organisation.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Sutton Valence School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
