Queen Anne's School Overview

Queen Anne's School is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18 in Caversham, Berkshire, just north of the River Thames and a short distance from Reading town centre. It was founded in 1894 by the Grey Coat Hospital Foundation, and the school is part of the United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation, a group of schools that share inter-foundation events.

The school has around 430 pupils, including a Sixth Form of about 140. Girls take English, mathematics and the three sciences to GCSE alongside options such as Mandarin, dance and textiles, then choose from a wide range of A Level subjects, including psychology, film studies and criminology.

Boarding at Queen Anne's School

The school has around 180 boarding places, and boarders come from more than 20 countries. Full, weekly, flexi and ad hoc boarding are offered, so boarding can be a full-time arrangement or a regular part of the school week. International students can also join the one-year International Pathway Programme in the Upper Fifth, living in Maddock alongside UK and international boarders.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls from Year 7 to Year 11 board in Maddock, which has a younger wing for new boarders, and Sixth Formers live in Holmes, with single and double en-suite rooms. Both houses have kitchens and communal areas for study, cooking and socialising. House staff are on hand throughout the day and evening, and Graduate Assistants in each house help run activities.

Boarding Life

After lessons, tea is followed by prep and activities until early evening. Saturday mornings bring sports fixtures and fitness sessions, followed by in-house activities, swimming, shopping in Reading or Caversham, and sessions led by outside groups such as paddle-boarding or self-defence. Every Sunday has an organised outing, from go-karting and indoor skydiving to museums, theatre and trips to London.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Development department, staffed by specialist teachers, supports girls with dyslexia, dyspraxia, mild speech and language difficulties and low-level ADHD through in-class support, one-to-one teaching and exam access arrangements. Girls register daily with their Head of Year and are supported by tutors, and five mixed-age Charters provide wellbeing ambassadors and peer mentoring across year groups.

International boarders at Queen Anne's School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
