Learn More →The King's School Canterbury is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Canterbury, Kent, for pupils aged 3 to 18. Its origins are traced to 597 AD. The Senior School, for ages 13 to 18, has houses around the Cathedral precincts and the St Augustine's site. Junior King's, the prep school for ages 3 to 13, is on an 80-acre estate at Milner Court in Sturry, about two miles away, and the International College for overseas pupils in Years 9 to 11 has its own campus a few minutes from the Senior School.
Senior pupils take GCSEs and then A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification in the Sixth Form. The International College teaches classes of no more than 12 and offers a preferential pathway into the Senior School.
Around 700 of the Senior School's roughly 950 pupils board, about one in five pupils holds an overseas nationality, and most boarders stay in school at weekends. Junior King's has around 50 boarders from Year 5, most of them full boarders, and almost all of the International College's 75 or so students board.
The Senior School has six boys' and seven girls' boarding houses; younger boarders share small dormitories and sixth formers have individual study bedrooms, each house having resident staff. Junior King's boarders live in two houses, Kipling for boys and Juckes for girls, in small dormitories, and International College students share twin rooms in a mixed house with separate floors for boys and girls.
Senior School Saturday mornings are given to lessons and afternoons to sports fixtures, and there are events every weekend. Junior King's boarders have Saturday school from Year 5, film nights and Sunday outings, while the International College runs house events and Sunday trips.
Senior pupils have a tutor within a group of around ten, a health centre with 24-hour nursing care in term, counsellors and the chaplaincy, and learning support for mild dyslexia is based in The Hub. Junior King's is CReSTeD registered for dyslexia and offers EAL lessons, and the International College builds academic English into every subject.

The Senior School admits pupils at 13+ into Year 9, at 14+ into Year 10 and at 16+ into the Sixth Form. Overseas pupils who need more time to build their English can first attend the International College in Years 9 to 11, on courses of one to three years. Most pupils join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Senior School pupils are expected to be fluent on arrival, and only a small number receive EAL support. The International College publishes minimum levels on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
Junior King's offers extra English lessons with an EAL-trained teacher for pupils whose first language is not English.
