Learn More →Kent College Canterbury is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Canterbury, Kent, for pupils from 3 months to 18 years. The Nursery and Junior School are at Harbledown, while the Senior School, Sixth Form and boarding houses share a campus overlooking the city. Founded in 1885, the school is part of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, a group of Methodist independent schools in England.
Pupils take GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma or A Levels, which can be combined with Cambridge Technicals. An on-site International Study Centre provides intensive English before students join mainstream classes.
Around a third of pupils board, and boarders come from more than 40 countries. Boarding starts at age 10, with junior boarders taking a bus to the Junior School each morning. Almost all boarders are full boarders, and weekly or occasional boarding is offered subject to availability.
Senior boarders live in four houses: Austen, co-educational for ages 11 to 18; Wesley, for girls aged 14 to 18; Gamon, for boys aged 14 to 18; and Elfick, a co-educational Sixth Form house. Younger pupils share rooms in small groups, Sixth Form students have their own study bedrooms where possible, and most rooms are en-suite. Each house has a House Parent, assistants and House Managers, with staff living in around the clock.
After supper, pupils in Years 7 to 9 complete prep in a supervised Study Hall, while older students study in their houses before evening activities. Saturday mornings bring clubs, sports fixtures and revision sessions, Sundays are kept for trips and outings, and boarders may visit Canterbury at weekends with permission. Termly events include a Christmas party, Lunar New Year celebrations and a Sixth Form Ball.
The Learning Support Centre has specialist leads for dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, autism and hearing impairment, offering small classes of three to six pupils, one-to-one sessions in Years 10 and 11, and exam access arrangements. Nurses staff the Medical Centre 24 hours a day during term, and the Sixth Form has its own pastoral and learning support provision.
