Learn More →Thornton College is an independent Catholic day and boarding school for girls aged 3 to 19 in the village of Thornton, Buckinghamshire, near Buckingham. It was founded in 1917 by the Sisters of Jesus and Mary, who bought the historic manor house at the centre of the 25-acre site, and it belongs to a worldwide family of Jesus and Mary schools in 31 countries. Around 360 girls attend, with around 50 in the Sixth Form.
Girls follow an all-through curriculum in small classes, taking GCSEs in the Senior School and then A Levels in the Sixth Form, alongside BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification.
Boarding is available from Year 3, at around age 7, to Year 13, with around 60 boarders. Termly boarders, the full boarding option, stay in school at weekends and go home or to guardians for half terms and holidays. Weekly boarding runs from Sunday evening to Friday, flexi boarding allows up to three nights a week, and short-stay immersion places are offered to international students.
Most boarders live in the main manor house. Rooms are allocated by age: girls in Years 6 to 9 use the Parlour Wing, opened in 2022, with larger shared rooms for Years 8 and 9 in the Tyrellcote Wing. Year 10 girls share twin rooms in the Harris and Warrington wings, Years 11 and 12 have single study bedrooms in the Whittlebury Wing, and Year 13 girls live in single rooms in The Villa, a detached house in the grounds with a resident House Mistress.
Boarders below Year 10 complete evening prep in a supervised study room with a member of boarding staff, while older girls work in their rooms with staff support. Most weekend trips run on Saturdays, to places such as London, Oxford and Alton Towers, with activities led by teaching staff on Sunday afternoons. On Sunday mornings girls attend Mass followed by brunch.
The Thrive Portfolio supports wellbeing and personal development. The Health Centre and school nurse look after boarders during the day, with housemistresses responsible in the evenings. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

The school admits girls throughout the year. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The school does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels by year of entry. All lessons are taught in English, and boarders can take ESOL lessons, offered at an additional charge. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Thornton College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Thornton College requires parents who live overseas to appoint an educational guardian. The guardian should be at least 25 years old, speak English, live within reasonable travelling distance of the school and be available 24 hours a day in an emergency. Parents may appoint a relative or family friend or an AEGIS accredited guardian. The school arranges airport transfers through a DBS checked service.

Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.
Thornton College runs a Short-Stay Immersion Programme for girls from Year 3 to Year 13, with stays from two weeks up to a full year as a full, weekly or day boarder. Short-stay students follow the normal timetable for their year group with a classroom buddy and can take ESOL lessons. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Thornton College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
