Learn More →Wellington College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in Crowthorne, Berkshire, for pupils aged 13 to 18. Established by Royal Charter in 1853 as the national memorial to the first Duke of Wellington and opened in 1859, the College stands on an estate of around 400 acres near Reading and Sandhurst. The school has been fully co-educational since 2005, and the College is part of the Wellington College Family of Schools, which also includes Wellington College Prep in nearby Sandhurst.
The College has around 1,200 pupils. Pupils take GCSEs in the middle school years, then choose between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the Sixth Form, with the Extended Project Qualification also available.
Wellington is a full boarding school where around 80 per cent of pupils, more than 900 in total, board, and more than 30 nationalities are represented. After Saturday commitments boarders may go home until Sunday evening, while those who remain stay in their houses for the weekend programme.
There are 18 houses, 16 for boarders and two for day pupils. Most boarding houses are single sex, and Elizabeth is a co-educational house for Sixth Form boarders. Anglesey, a purpose-built girls' house for around 70 pupils, mixes all ages, with single and double rooms around a central living area. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress, often with a resident deputy, supported by year group tutors, a matron and a housekeeper, with adult cover 24 hours a day.
Houses are where pupils live, sleep, relax and work. Evenings combine dedicated study and prep time with time to unwind with friends in house. Weekends bring sports fixtures, trips, social events and house activities.
Specialist teachers in the Academic Support department give timetabled one-to-one and small-group help with organisation, revision, executive function skills and exam access arrangements, and the College supports mild needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism. Wellbeing lessons are timetabled, a Health Centre is on site, and the Sixth Form has its own centre and university and careers guidance.

For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Wellington College website.
Wellington College admits international boarders mainly at 13+, into the Third Form (Year 9), and at 16+, into the Lower Sixth (Year 12), with around 20 to 30 international pupils joining at each of these stages every year. A small number of places are offered at 14+, and pupils who join Wellington College Prep at 11 can move up to the College in Year 9. Overseas applicants follow the same admissions process as UK candidates, and joining at other stages is rare because of the structure of GCSE, A Level and IB courses. Students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The College does not publish a minimum CEFR or IELTS level, but expects international pupils to be proficient, if not fluent, in spoken and written English when they arrive. English is assessed as part of the application, and Sixth Form applicants whose first language is not English complete an additional assessment. English as an Additional Language support is available for pupils who need it. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Wellington College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Wellington College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
