Wellington College Prep Overview

Wellington College Prep is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school in Sandhurst, Berkshire, for children aged 3 to 13. Founded in 1820 as Eagle House School, it is one of the oldest prep schools in the country. The school is part of the Wellington College Family of Schools and is governed by Wellington College, the charity that runs the senior school in Crowthorne.

The Pre-Prep runs from Nursery to Year 2 and the Prep School covers Years 3 to 8. Around 60 per cent of leavers continue to Wellington College at 13, and the rest move to other senior schools.

Boarding at Wellington College Prep

Full, weekly and flexi boarding are offered from around age 8. There are more than 70 boarders, most of them weekly or flexi boarders alongside a smaller group of full boarders, and international pupils make up around 12 per cent of the school roll.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in one boarding house with almost 70 beds across ten dormitories, shared by full, weekly and flexi boarders. Houseparents lead a team of boarding staff, some of whom teach and can help with schoolwork, and boarders have their own common room with sofas, table football and a large screen television.

Boarding Life

Each year group has a dedicated study session every evening, with boarding staff on hand to help, followed by free time in the house. Boarders use the swimming pool, sports hall and drama studio, and the calendar includes film nights, discos and Christmas carols in the Old Library. Pupils in Years 5 to 8 attend Saturday school every other weekend, and boarders keep in daily contact with parents.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A Learning Support department works with pupils who have specific learning difficulties, and the Good Schools Guide also lists provision for speech, language and communication needs. English as an Additional Language classes are provided for international pupils who need them, and Houseparents oversee the welfare of boarders.
