Westminster School Overview

Westminster School is an independent day and boarding school in central London, set around Little Dean's Yard within the precincts of Westminster Abbey and beside the Houses of Parliament. It educates around 750 pupils aged 13 to 18, while Westminster Under School, run by the same charity, takes day pupils aged 4 to 13. Refounded by Elizabeth I in 1560, the school still uses the Abbey as its chapel.

Boys join at 13 and the Sixth Form has been co-educational since 1973. Pupils take GCSEs and then four A Levels from 23 subjects, alongside the Extended Project Qualification and the school's own Options courses.

Boarding at Westminster School

Between a quarter and a third of pupils board, with around 180 boarding places. Boarding is term-time only, with Saturday morning school. Boarders in Years 9 to 11 go home at weekends, and international boarders are accepted only in the Sixth Form, when a smaller group of boarders stays in school at weekends with the library and sports centre open. The school closes for half terms and two exeat weekends each term.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Six of the 11 houses take boarders alongside day pupils, all in and around Little Dean's Yard. College is home to the King's Scholars, Purcell's, opened in 1981 for girl boarders, accommodates Sixth Form boarders, and most other boarding houses, such as Liddell's, board both girls and boys, with common rooms and kitchens. Each house is led by a housemaster, supported by tutors and matrons.

Boarding Life

Boarders complete a structured prep session every evening, supervised by housemasters and tutors, and the library is staffed until 9pm in term time. Houses run their own and whole-school events, from boarders' brunches and film nights to pizza-making and karaoke, and a Head of International Pupils organises weekend boarding and integration events. At the end of each term, house staff take boarders on outings such as go-karting and ice skating.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Development department, including a SENCO and an EAL lead, supports pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions and sensory impairments, offering one-to-one mentoring, small-group support and exam access arrangements. Each pupil's tutor works with the housemaster on academic progress and wellbeing.

Every international boarder at Westminster School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Westminster School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Westminster School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Westminster School accepts international boarders only at 16+ entry into Year 12, and overseas candidates who are selected are offered a boarding place; the school does not take boarders under 16 whose parents live overseas. Around 75 to 85 Sixth Form places are offered each year to girls and boys, chosen on academic criteria alone, and students join in September for the two-year A Level course. Candidates following qualifications other than GCSEs are considered. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Westminster School expects candidates to be fluent in written and spoken English. Applicants with English as an additional language provide evidence of their level, such as an IELTS Academic report, and the same evidence is needed for Child Student visa sponsorship. Once pupils join, an EAL lead within the Learning Development department is available to support them.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Westminster School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and offers visa sponsorship for students entering at 16+, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Pupils whose parents live abroad must have a UK guardian, and the guardian's details are needed before an application can proceed. The guardian acts in place of parents during term time, is available to school staff, and looks after the pupil if they are unwell or need to spend time away from school. The school closes over half terms and for two exeat weekends each term, and pupils stay with their guardian at these times.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Westminster School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Westminster School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Westminster School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Westminster School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Westminster School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
