Mill Hill School Overview

Mill Hill School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18 in Mill Hill Village, north London. Founded in 1807 by nonconformists, it stands in extensive parkland on The Ridgeway and is the flagship of the Mill Hill Education Group, a not-for-profit group of independent schools. Mill Hill International, opened in 2015 on its own site within the same campus, prepares overseas pupils for Mill Hill School or another British boarding school.

Around 900 pupils attend the school, more than 350 of them in the Sixth Form, and follow GCSEs and then A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification also offered. Mill Hill International teaches classes of 10 to 12, with GCSE, Pre-A Level and A Level courses.

Boarding at Mill Hill School

Mill Hill is mainly a day school, with more than 200 boarders across the campus once the 100 or so Mill Hill International pupils, who share the houses, are included. Full boarding is intended mainly for international pupils and families living further away, and Mill Hill International students whose visa the school sponsors must board full time.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in four purpose-built houses. Macgregor is a girls' house for around 25 boarders from Year 9 to Year 13, while Collinson, Ridgeway and Burton Bank are co-educational houses with mixed year groups, each home to between about 30 and 65 boarders. Every house is led by a Housemaster, Housemistress or House Parent, and room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

The school day is longer than average and planned with boarders in mind. Evenings include supervised study time, and the boarding programme combines weekly on-campus activities with trips into London. Mill Hill International pupils join the school's Games, Music and Drama and live alongside British peers.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support team screens literacy in Year 9 and offers individual or small-group sessions and exam access arrangements. A wellbeing wing offers psychotherapy and counselling, and the Foundation Chaplain supports pupils of all faiths and none. At Mill Hill International, EAL support runs through every course and sixth formers receive UCAS guidance.

International boarders at Mill Hill School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Mill Hill School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Mill Hill School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Mill Hill School admits international boarders mainly at 13+ (Year 9), with a few places at 14+ and a significant intake into the Lower Sixth at 16+. Students who need to strengthen their English or adapt to the British curriculum can first join Mill Hill International in Years 9 to 12 or its Pre-A Level programme for ages 15 to 17, and pupils who complete its One-Year GCSE course may apply for A Levels at Mill Hill School. Entry is in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Mill Hill International's Pre-A Level programme accepts students at CEFR A2 to B1 (IELTS 3.0 to 4.0) with 15 hours of English a week, working towards the B2 level needed for A Level study.

Child Student Visa

Students from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Mill Hill School and Mill Hill International are licensed Child Student sponsors on the UKVI register through the Mill Hill School Foundation, part of the Mill Hill Education Group, and Mill Hill International considers only full boarding applications when it sponsors a visa. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Mill Hill states that full boarders, most of whom are international pupils, are supported by an educational guardian of the family's choosing, and the Mill Hill Education Group publishes its own guardianship policy. UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Mill Hill School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular liaison with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Mill Hill School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Mill Hill School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Mill Hill School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Mill Hill School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
