Learn More →Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) was formed in 1993 through the merger of The Queen's College, Glasgow, founded in 1875, and Glasgow Polytechnic. Its main campus is a single city centre site in Cowcaddens, close to Buchanan Street and the main rail and bus stations. The university also operates GCU London, a smaller campus in the capital offering programmes in areas such as business, fashion and public health, and it has transnational partnerships in several countries across Asia and the Middle East.
GCU has more than 22,000 students and is organised into three schools: Science and Engineering, the Glasgow School for Business and Society, and Health and Life Sciences. Health is a notable strength, with physiotherapy and allied health subjects particularly well regarded, and health research at GCU was recognised for outstanding impact in REF 2021. The university describes its mission as serving the common good, and it places strong emphasis on widening access, sustainability and graduate employability, with over 90 per cent of graduates in work or further study.
Glasgow Caledonian University welcomes students from more than 100 countries. As a licensed student sponsor, it issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) required for a Student visa, and a dedicated visa team handles immigration queries and supports international students throughout their studies. The university runs welcome programmes for the September, January and May intakes, with social activities continuing through the academic year, and offers a free airport pick-up service for international students arriving at Glasgow Airport.
The typical English language requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall, with no element below 5.5, for many programmes, although some courses set higher scores. A range of other English tests and some national secondary school qualifications are also accepted. First-year international students receive priority for the university's on-campus residence, Caledonian Court, although places are limited and a room is not automatically guaranteed. Graduates may be eligible for the UK Graduate Route, which allows time to work in the UK after completing a degree.
Intake information is provided as a general guide. Start dates vary between universities and courses, and not every course is offered at every intake. Please follow the UCAS deadlines for undergraduate applications and check the latest dates on the official Glasgow Caledonian University website.
UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Glasgow Caledonian University is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Our UK university guardianship services for Glasgow Caledonian University start from £250 per term. We also offer premium and bespoke packages, and with our flexible guardianship services you only pay for the services you need. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Glasgow Caledonian University may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
