Learn More →The actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree established the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1904 at His Majesty's Theatre, in London's West End. A year later the academy relocated to Gower Street, and its royal charter followed in 1920. RADA offers intensive vocational conservatoire training, preparing actors as well as the designers, stage managers and technical specialists employed across theatre, film, television and radio. King's College London validates its degrees, and links also exist with Birkbeck, University of London.
Its base is central London: the principal building stands on Gower Street, the theatres are on Malet Street and additional studios are on Chenies Street. Student productions are staged in five performance spaces, among them the George Bernard Shaw Theatre and the Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre. At undergraduate level, the three-year BA (Hons) in Acting takes only about 28 students a year, and the Foundation Degree in Technical Theatre and Stage Management, a two-year course, can be followed by an optional BA (Hons) progression year. The MA Theatre Lab is among its postgraduate options, and foundation and short courses are also offered. King Charles III is RADA's Royal Patron.
RADA holds a Student sponsor licence and will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies after receiving all the documents it requires. Applicants can consult the academy's written visa guidance and approach the admissions team for advice. Any student who is not exempt needs to sit a Secure English Language Test as part of the visa application. Undergraduate courses have set English at CEFR level B2, and certain postgraduate programmes demand a higher standard.
Overseas candidates for the BA (Hons) in Acting go through the same four stages as UK applicants: a pair of self-tape audition rounds, a three-hour workshop attended in person, and a final full-day workshop at RADA in London. Applicants must have turned 18 by the time the course starts. International candidates are encouraged to apply early, allowing enough time to arrange travel should they progress to the final stage. UK government student loans are closed to international students, who in most cases also cannot receive RADA scholarships, and US Federal Loans cannot be used for RADA courses. The Graduate Route may be open to those graduating from eligible degree programmes.
Intake information is provided as a general guide. Start dates vary between universities and courses, and not every course is offered at every intake. Please follow the UCAS deadlines for undergraduate applications and check the latest dates on the official RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) website.
UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Our UK university guardianship services for RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) start from £250 per term. We also offer premium and bespoke packages, and with our flexible guardianship services you only pay for the services you need. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
