English language requirements are set programme by programme, and many courses typically ask for IELTS 6.5 overall. Applicants who need to improve their English can take a BALEAP-accredited pre-sessional course with the university's English for Academic Study unit before their degree begins. Glasgow International College, run in partnership with Kaplan since 2007, offers foundation certificates in business and social sciences or science and engineering, together with pre-master's programmes in subjects such as law, business and the sciences, with progression to degree study at the university for successful students.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. University of Glasgow may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own.
