Recruitment Of Ex-Offenders Policy
Fair, individual assessment for every applicant, with safeguarding at the centre of each recruitment decision.
Summary
This policy sets out how British Guardianship treats applicants with criminal convictions fairly while safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. As an organisation that undertakes criminal record checks through the Disclosure Scotland PVG Scheme and, where applicable, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), we welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, and a criminal record does not automatically exclude anyone from working with us. Every disclosure is assessed individually, considering the nature and relevance of the offence, the time elapsed, and evidence of rehabilitation, with applicants given the opportunity to discuss their circumstances openly and confidentially. All information is handled in strict confidence, and every recruitment decision remains subject to our overriding duty to protect the children and young people in our care.
To make sure this policy always reflects the highest standards of fairness and student protection, it is reviewed and updated every year in line with Disclosure Scotland guidance, rehabilitation and disclosure legislation, and the standards set by our accrediting bodies, AEGIS and the Boarding Schools' Association (BSA). This annual review ensures our approach keeps pace with changes in legislation, official guidance, and best practice, so that applicants, parents, and schools can be confident our recruitment procedures remain fair, lawful, and safe.
