Ampleforth College Overview

Ampleforth College is an independent, co-educational Catholic boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18, set in a valley on the edge of the North York Moors in North Yorkshire. The college was founded in the early 1800s in the grounds of Ampleforth Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, and is governed by the St Laurence Education Trust. Girls first joined the Sixth Form in 1998, and the college is now fully co-educational.

Years 7 and 8 follow a broad curriculum leading to the Ampleforth Junior Certificate, before pupils move on to GCSEs. The Sixth Form offers A Levels, BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Ampleforth College

Ampleforth is primarily a full boarding school, with almost 300 boarders among just over 400 pupils, and roughly a third of pupils are international. Junior House pupils in Years 7 and 8 can choose full, weekly or three-night flexi boarding, while from Year 9 pupils either board full time or attend as day pupils.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Years 7 and 8 live in the co-educational Junior House, St Edward's and St Wilfrid's. From Year 9, pupils join one of seven senior houses, three for girls and four for boys, each with its own chapel. Rooms change with age: in St John's, for example, Year 9 boys share six-bed dormitories, Years 10 and 11 have en-suite twin rooms and Sixth Formers have individual rooms. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a resident assistant, tutors, matrons and a chaplain.

Boarding Life

Days begin with house prayers and breakfast before lessons start at 8.40am. Afternoons bring sport or activities, followed by supper for the whole school in the refectory, supervised prep with house tutors and evening prayers. Saturdays combine morning lessons, afternoon fixtures and evening socials for each year group, while Sundays start with Mass and continue with trips and activities.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Hub is the base for learning support, offering regular sessions or short bursts of targeted help. Each pupil has a personal tutor responsible for about six pupils, and house staff, matrons and chaplains oversee wellbeing. Timetabled EAL lessons are available, with one-to-one specialist teaching where needed.

International boarders at Ampleforth College are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Ampleforth College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Ampleforth College accepts international students into any year group from Year 7 to the Sixth Form. Some stay for seven years, from Junior House to the end of the Sixth Form, while others join for a specific course such as GCSEs or A Levels. Enrolment for international students is in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The college does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS scores, asking that pupils can manage the normal academic curriculum. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils who need support have timetabled EAL lessons, with private lessons from a specialist teacher where necessary, and Sixth Form students prepare for IELTS ahead of UK university applications.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Ampleforth College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place has been accepted, usually in May ahead of September entry. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Families and guardians are welcome at weekends to watch matches and attend Mass, and may take pupils out after Saturday fixtures or Sunday Mass.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Ampleforth College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Ampleforth College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Ampleforth College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Ampleforth College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Ampleforth College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
