Bootham School Overview

Bootham School is an independent, co-educational Quaker day and boarding school in the centre of York, North Yorkshire, close to the city walls and York Minster. Founded in 1823 by York Quaker families, among them the Rowntrees and the Terrys, it educates pupils from nursery to 18 across a Junior School, a Senior School and a sixth form known as the College.

The Senior School has around 460 pupils, including about 150 in the College. A broad curriculum in Years 7 to 9 leads to GCSEs, and College students take A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification available. Each modern language has a native speaker teacher.

Boarding at Bootham School

Boarding is open from Year 7 to Year 13 for around 80 students, most of them full boarders staying four to seven nights a week. Flexi boarders stay two or three nights, and day pupils can book occasional nights when space allows. The school has students from more than 20 countries.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls board in Rowntree and boys in Fox, two houses in Georgian buildings, each with a common room, kitchen, student laundry and Wi-Fi. Younger boarders share rooms of up to four, while College students usually have twin rooms, with some singles available. Two resident staff live in each house, supported by day staff and resident graduate assistants.

Boarding Life

After an afternoon activity session, boarders have tea, evening prep and a second session using the fitness suite, sports hall, music rooms or house games. Saturday mornings are usually taught, followed by sports fixtures or trips into York. On Sundays, brunch is followed by organised outings such as stargazing in Dalby Forest, water sports, snowboarding, theatre trips and visits to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The learning support department and a small team of assistants work with pupils who have dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD or autism, assessing each case individually. Small tutor groups overseen by Heads of Year provide daily pastoral care, and College tutor groups are mixed-year and formed around shared A Level subjects. The Lodge health centre is led by a nurse with a visiting school doctor, and every student can see a trained counsellor.

Every international boarder at Bootham School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Bootham School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Bootham School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Bootham School admits international boarders from Year 7, and students from more than 20 countries attend the school. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils whose first language is not English receive additional English teaching, with up to four lessons a week in the early years, taught one to one or in very small groups. Where the school judges that support is needed, these lessons are compulsory and included in the termly fees. International students joining the College can also attend classes that prepare them for IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Bootham School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and obtains the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies for each sponsored student, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. The school also records sponsored boarders' travel and holiday arrangements. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Bootham School requires every student whose parents live overseas to have a UK guardian for the whole of their time at the school. The guardian must be over 25 and may be a family member, a family friend or a DBS checked guardian from an agency, ideally living within two hours of York; university students in halls of residence are not accepted. The school strongly recommends an AEGIS accredited guardianship organisation. Students stay with their guardian at leave weekends, half terms and holidays, as boarding accommodation is not available outside term dates.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Bootham School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, airport meetings and travel coordination, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Bootham School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Bootham School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Bootham School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Bootham School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
