Learn More →The Mount School is an independent Quaker day and boarding school in York, North Yorkshire, for children aged 2 to 18, with a co-educational preschool and Prep School for children up to 11 and an all-girls Senior School and Sixth Form. Its heritage dates back to 1785, when the Quakers Esther and William Tuke opened a school for Quaker daughters. The 16-acre campus on Dalton Terrace is about fifteen minutes' walk from York railway station and the city centre.
Girls take GCSEs and then A Levels in the Sixth Form, known at the school as College, alongside the Ignite Programme, which builds confidence, creativity, resilience and leadership. Quaker values shape daily life, and pupils of all faiths are welcome. York has direct trains to London in just under two hours.
Boarding is open to girls aged 11 to 18 in a small community of around 35 boarders, who have recently come from Hong Kong, mainland China, South Korea, Mexico, Spain, Germany and the UK, among other countries. Full boarders stay seven nights a week in term time, weekly boarders stay five nights, and flexi boarding is available when space allows.
All boarders live in School House, within the main school building. Younger girls share bedrooms with two or three others close to the boarding staff, while College girls have their own floor, usually sharing in pairs, with a Sixth Form lounge and individual studies. A resident Head of Boarding leads a team of assistant houseparents and graduate assistants, with two staff on duty overnight.
Weekdays include enrichment activities from 4pm to 6pm, a three-course evening meal, supervised prep and evening activities such as baking and quiz nights, with bedtimes from 9.15pm to 10.45pm by age. There is no Saturday school, and the weekend programme, planned with the boarders, has included trips to London, Leeds and Manchester, go-karting, ice skating, theme parks and the Yorkshire coast.
A SEND department supports pupils with specific learning difficulties through individual help and learning strategies. An on-site Health Centre with a qualified nurse and a school counsellor look after boarders' physical and emotional wellbeing.
Every international boarder at The Mount School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official The Mount School website.
The Mount School accepts overseas boarders from age 11, placing each girl in a year group according to her age and ability, and takes pupils for one term up to a full academic year as well as long-term boarders. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
No minimum IELTS or CEFR scores are published by year group. Applicants whose first language is not English should be reasonably fluent in written and spoken English, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
A qualified EAL teacher, who is also a senior IELTS examiner, teaches small-group lessons, and pupils join mainstream classes with extra support and weekly assessment. Intensive English courses prepare students for GCSE or A Level, and pupils can take Cambridge Key, Preliminary and First examinations or IGCSE English.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. The Mount School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and its admissions team guides families through the visa stage, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Parents of boarders who live outside the UK must appoint an educational guardian or guardianship organisation, as The Mount School does not appoint guardians itself. The guardian must be able to accommodate the student whenever she cannot be in school, including holidays, illness or an emergency closure, and is invited to school events and parents' meetings.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for The Mount School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Whenever your child cannot stay at The Mount School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with The Mount School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. The Mount School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
