Aysgarth School Overview

Aysgarth School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day preparatory school for children aged 3 to 13, set in more than 50 acres at Newton-le-Willows near Bedale in North Yorkshire. Founded in 1877 near Aysgarth Falls, the school moved into its purpose-built home at Newton-le-Willows in 1890 and is part of the Rugby School Group. Girls joined the Prep School in September 2024, having been taught in the Pre-Prep for more than 30 years.

Pupils are prepared for entry and scholarships to senior schools across the UK, and recent leavers have moved on to Oundle, Shrewsbury, Downe House, Rugby and Tring Park. A Boarding Pathway with Rugby School gives eligible pupils who join in Year 6 or Year 7 an unconditional offer to continue at Rugby.

Boarding at Aysgarth School

Around 85 per cent of pupils board, children board from age 8, and more than 100 boarders stay in school on most weekends. UK families can choose full, weekly or regular boarding of two or three nights a week, while international pupils sponsored by the school board full time. International pupils make up less than 10 per cent of the school community.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live together in the school's boarding house and sleep in dormitories, starting each day at 7am by washing, dressing and tidying their dorms before breakfast. An experienced boarding team cares for pupils with a staff to pupil ratio of about one to five. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Younger boarders have tea at 5.30pm and evening activities such as swimming, climbing or riding before bed at around 7.45pm, while pupils in Years 7 and 8 have supervised evening prep before senior activities and bed at about 8pm. More than 60 evening activities run each week, from baking to debating. Saturday afternoons are given to matches, and Sundays begin with chapel, followed by clay pigeon shooting, paddleboarding, mountain biking, cooking or cinema trips.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Department offers dyslexia screening and help with reading, handwriting, coordination and study skills. The Good Schools Guide lists provision for dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, social, emotional and mental health needs, and visual impairment. Additional English support is available where needed.

Every international boarder at Aysgarth School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Aysgarth School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Aysgarth School accepts international boarders into the Prep School, where the usual entry point is Year 4 at age 8, and pupils can be admitted to any year group up to Year 8 where places are available. Most pupils start in September. International pupils board full time, and the school limits the number of non-native English speakers in each class so that they settle into an English-speaking environment. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The school does not publish minimum scores. Where a pupil needs extra help to keep pace with the year group, the school arranges additional English as an Additional Language support, charged to parents, with the aim of fast progress. Living in a boarding community where most pupils are native speakers also helps international pupils build confidence in spoken English.

Child Student Visa

International pupils will usually need a Child Student visa to study in the UK. Aysgarth School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and offers places to overseas pupils as sponsored full boarders. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Aysgarth School requires each overseas pupil to have an appointed guardian living in the UK, with whom the child can stay on some weekends. Exeats run from Friday lunchtime to Monday evening roughly every three weeks, and full boarders may take one optional extra weekend away, so the guardian plays a regular part in hosting and travel.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Aysgarth School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service includes regular contact with the school, coordination of escorted travel and airport transfers, and stays with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents one reliable point of contact in the UK.
