Bilton Grange Overview

Bilton Grange is an independent, co-educational day and boarding preparatory school for children aged 3 to 13, set in around 90 acres of parkland at Dunchurch, on the edge of Rugby in Warwickshire. Founded in 1873, the school moved to its present site in 1887 and has been part of the Rugby School Group, alongside Rugby School, since 2020. The school has a Church of England affiliation.

Children progress from The Nest pre-school and the Pre-Prep, for ages 4 to 8, into the Prep School for ages 8 to 13. Pupils are prepared for Common Entrance and senior school entry at 13, and more than half of leavers move on to Rugby School.

Boarding at Bilton Grange

Boarding is available from Year 4 (age 8) to Year 8, and families can choose full boarding seven days a week, weekly boarding, or flexi boarding for single nights or a few nights each week. Around 60 pupils board, and the school community includes pupils from Spain, Finland, Kenya, Japan and China, among other countries. Boarders who join in Year 7 can follow a boarding pathway into Rugby School without competing against external applicants.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in Earle House, a new boarding house that welcomed its first pupils in 2025. Arranged over four levels linked by stairs and a helter-skelter slide, it has twin to four-bed rooms, all en-suite, with hub spaces for games and music, a cinema area, common rooms and a central courtyard. House parents and other boarding staff live in accommodation within the building.

Boarding Life

The Prep School day runs until 7.30pm and includes supper. Weekends are planned to feel like time at home, with games, treasure hunts, campfires, a Saturday film night and a Sunday excursion to places such as Warwick Castle or Drayton Manor. Dormitories are scored each week in house awards that reward organisation.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A head of learning support coordinates help for pupils with additional needs, working with parents and outside professionals, and all pupils are screened for dyslexia. Boarders have a voice through Boarding Ambassadors chosen from Year 8 each term and a boarding council, and house staff check in with each boarder regularly.

International boarders at Bilton Grange are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Bilton Grange may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own.
