Learn More →Rugby School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in the market town of Rugby, Warwickshire, educating students aged 13 to 18, with boys and girls in roughly equal numbers. Founded in 1567, it is one of the original seven English public schools. The school is part of the Rugby School Group, which includes four UK preparatory schools and sister schools in Thailand, Japan, Nigeria, Dubai and Hanoi.
Students join in Year 9 and follow a broad curriculum through to GCSE, before choosing between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the Sixth Form. International students can also join a one-year Pre-Diploma course in Year 11, which prepares a small cohort for the IB Diploma.
Around three quarters of students board, and roughly one in five boarders comes from overseas. Boarding at Rugby is full boarding: boarders stay in their house all term, seven days a week, apart from two exeat weekends either side of a week-long half term. Weekly and flexi boarding are not offered.
There are 13 boarding houses: six for girls, including Stanley for Sixth Form girls, and seven for boys. Each house has around 50 students, roughly 10 from each year group. New Year 9 students share a bedroom with two or three others, Year 10 students share with one other, and Sixth Form students have their own study bedroom. Every house has a Housemaster or Housemistress, a deputy and two matrons, and all meals are served in the house by its own chef.
Prep is organised six evenings a week. Saturdays are built around sports fixtures, and houses hold socials with one another, while organised outings, student-led clubs and a quieter Sunday complete the weekend. The library, art studios and Sports Centre stay open at weekends.
Each boarding house has its own Learning Development teacher, and students with specific learning difficulties can take small-group lessons in place of one subject option, or individual weekly sessions, with a focus on literacy and assistive software. Every student has a tutor who meets them privately each week, and trained Sixth Form peer coaches add a further layer of pastoral support.
Every international boarder at Rugby School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Rugby School website.
Rugby School admits international boarders at two main points: Year 9, at age 13, and Year 12, at age 16, for the Sixth Form. A third route is the one-year Pre-Diploma in Year 11, designed for around 20 international students who want to strengthen their English and academic skills before starting the IB Diploma. Students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Rugby does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels for international entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Once at school, students with English as an additional language receive specialist help to develop their written and spoken English, and the department advises subject teachers on how best to support them. Students who need an English qualification for British universities are prepared for IELTS.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Rugby School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Rugby School requires families living overseas to appoint an accredited UK guardian. Because boarders leave school for two exeat weekends and a half term each term, as well as the holidays, the guardian plays an important role in arranging travel and accommodation throughout the year.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Rugby School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination through Birmingham and London airports, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Rugby School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.
Whenever your child cannot stay at Rugby School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Rugby School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Rugby School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
