Learn More →Bryanston School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school near Blandford Forum in Dorset, set on a 400-acre estate centred on a late Victorian red-brick mansion. Founded in 1928, it educates pupils from 3 to 18: Bryanston Prep, formerly Knighton House, merged with the school in 2021 and has its own site on the estate, while the Senior School takes pupils from 13 to 18.
Senior pupils take GCSEs and IGCSEs, then choose between A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Cambridge Technical (CTEC) courses in the Sixth Form. The Bryanston method combines lessons with timetabled assignment periods and small-group correction sessions, building independent study habits.
Bryanston is primarily a full boarding school with a minority of day pupils, and around 15 percent of pupils come from overseas, from countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Full boarders stay in school except for exeats, holidays and open weekends, and short stay programmes let pupils aged 13 to 18 try boarding life.
The Senior School has five boys' houses and five girls' houses, junior boys' accommodation including Beechwood for the youngest senior pupils, and a boarding house for the Prep School. Younger pupils share rooms, Lower Sixth pupils have single or double study bedrooms and Upper Sixth pupils have their own rooms. Each house is run by a resident House Parent with a Deputy House Parent, a Matron and two resident teaching staff, so an adult is available from wake-up until lights out.
Roughly half of all weekends are whole school weekends, when boarders remain in school, and the rest are exeat or open weekends. Weekend life includes house dinners, concerts, theatre, the Charities Fair, cinema trips, paintballing, rowing, canoeing and riding. Houses have social areas and kitchens, and evening prep is part of the weekly routine.
Every pupil has a personal tutor, met one-to-one each week, and an online system lets pupils, tutors and parents follow assignments and marks. The learning support department offers individual lessons outside class time. A Mental and Emotional Health team in the Medical Centre provides counselling and specialist therapies, working with House Parents and Matrons.

Bryanston welcomes overseas pupils into Year 9 or Year 10 for GCSEs, into Year 11 for a pre-IB year designed for international students, and into Year 12 for the Sixth Form, with most joining in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
All pupils must be proficient in written and spoken English to access the curriculum, and those whose first language is not English complete an English proficiency assessment. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Bryanston School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with an external visa support provider, issuing sponsorship once a place is accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Pupils whose parents live overseas must have an adult guardian in the UK, and the school points families to accredited guardianship providers. The guardian acts as a 24-hour emergency contact, arranges holiday travel and accommodation and attends school events, and pupils under 16 must be accompanied to and from their point of departure.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Bryanston School boarders. Bryanston runs Short Stay Programmes for pupils aged 13 to 18, who board with support from tutors and pupil mentors. A General Course follows a personalised timetable within mainstream lessons, while a Specialist Provision Course focuses on performing arts, art, technology and engineering, entrepreneurship, sport or equestrian. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
