Clayesmore Overview

Clayesmore is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school at Iwerne Minster, near Blandford Forum in Dorset, for children aged 3 months to 18 years. All stages share a 62-acre estate centred on a Victorian manor house by Alfred Waterhouse. Founded in 1896, the school moved to Dorset in 1933 and is part of Inspired Learning Group, a UK group of independent schools and nurseries.

Boarding is offered from Year 3. Senior pupils take between six and eleven GCSEs, with IGCSE English as a Second Language available to international students, and Sixth Form students combine A Levels, BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at Clayesmore

Around 50 boys and girls board in the Prep School, and the school aims to keep international students at around 15% of pupils, with recent boarders from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Nigeria, Kenya, Turkey, China and Hong Kong. Families choose full boarding seven days a week, weekly boarding from Monday to Saturday or flexi boarding on set nights.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Clayesmore has five boarding houses. Prep boarders from Year 3 to Year 8 live in Aubrey, a mixed house run by resident Houseparents with matrons and tutors. Senior boys board in Manor and Gate and senior girls in Kings and Wolverton, each taking pupils from Year 9 to Year 13 under Houseparents and a pastoral team. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Senior evenings follow dinner with supervised prep and free time in the house common rooms. Saturdays combine the LEX enrichment programme with sports fixtures, and Sundays are kept for trips and social events. Prep boarders have evening swimming, baking and films, with Sunday outings to the coast, Monkey World and the Haynes Motor Museum. International students can stay in school over exeat weekends, when trips are provided.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Clayesmore holds CReSTeD accreditation and has supported pupils with learning differences for more than 25 years. A specialist team led by the SENCO supports dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and speech and language needs. The Health and Wellbeing Centre, staffed by nurses and matrons, offers overnight care and weekly GP clinics for boarders, and a counsellor is in school three days a week.

Every international boarder at Clayesmore must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Clayesmore

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Clayesmore website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Clayesmore accepts international pupils into the Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form, for a minimum of two terms or for the rest of their education. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Clayesmore does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Pupils take a placement assessment on arrival to decide between EAL and mainstream English classes. Small EAL classes, charged as an extra, often replace a modern foreign language or supervised study, and the school, a Cambridge exam centre, prepares pupils for Cambridge English qualifications, IGCSE English as a Second Language and IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Clayesmore is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through CM School London Limited, and the school manages the compliance requirements for sponsored pupils, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Clayesmore requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have a UK-based guardian and refers families to AEGIS and the BSA Certified Guardian scheme. The boarding houses close at half terms and holidays, when pupils go home or stay with their guardian.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Clayesmore boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers contact with the school, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Clayesmore considers stays shorter than two terms case by case, and its immersion programmes for students aged 10 to 18 run from one week to several weeks, with participants joining lessons, activities and daily routines alongside Clayesmore pupils. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Clayesmore's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Clayesmore, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Clayesmore is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Clayesmore may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
