Learn More →Milton Abbey School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 13 to 18 at Milton Abbas, near Blandford Forum in Dorset. Founded as a boys' school in 1954 on the site of a tenth-century abbey, it has been fully co-educational since 2012 and is a small school of around 220 pupils set in 180 acres of countryside.
Pupils take GCSEs before moving into a Sixth Form that combines A Levels with BTEC courses, including vocational options such as Entrepreneurship and Digital Content. A working farm, stables and a private golf course on the estate support courses and activities.
Around nine in ten pupils board, and most are full boarders who stay in school at weekends; weekly boarding is not offered. About a third of pupils are international, from more than 20 countries. Boarders go home at half term and for a long exeat weekend either side of it, and some beds stay open during exeats for students who cannot travel home. A Short-Term Experience Programme also welcomes overseas students for shorter stays.
There are five houses, Athelstan, Damer, Hambro, Hughie's and Tregonwell, with boys and girls housed separately. Year groups mix within each house, and day pupils also belong to one. Rooms range from shared bedrooms to single rooms for Sixth Form students, and each house is run by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a house team.
Weekends combine lessons and sport with activities, and clubs such as cookery, photography and the Farm Club run each weekday evening after supper alongside time for homework. The weekend programme includes town and cinema trips, waterparks, country shows, cultural visits each half term, and caving, kayaking, sailing and Ten Tors training.
Learning Development is built into everyday teaching, and specialist staff support pupils with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia through in-class help, individual and small-group sessions and assistive technology; speech and language therapy is also available. Every pupil has a personal tutor, and the Health Centre is staffed by registered nurses 24 hours a day.

Milton Abbey School admits international boarders from age 13, with the main entry points at Year 9 and Year 12. Students can also join other year groups and take courses lasting from a single term to the full five years. Most international students join in September, and other entry points are considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. International students can take EAL lessons with three specialist teachers, following a programme tailored to each student, and IELTS preparation is offered for those who will need it for UK university entry.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Milton Abbey School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Milton Abbey School requires every Child Student visa holder to have a guardian resident in the UK throughout their studies, who may be a relative, a family friend or an AEGIS accredited organisation. The school does not provide chaperones for unaccompanied minors, so the guardian plays a central part in travel at the start and end of each term.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Milton Abbey School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.
Through its Short-Term Experience Programme, Milton Abbey School welcomes overseas students as fully integrated pupils for a shorter stay, joining lessons, boarding life and trips to British heritage sites. As the school runs full boarding only, short-stay students remain in school at weekends. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Milton Abbey School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
