Learn More →Charterhouse is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in Godalming, Surrey, for more than 1,000 pupils aged 13 to 18. Founded in 1611 by Thomas Sutton as a school for 40 boys near Charterhouse Square in London, it now occupies a 250-acre campus around 50 minutes from the capital. The school leads the Charterhouse Group, which includes a family of three prep schools in England and Charterhouse schools overseas in Kuala Lumpur, Lagos and Almaty.
Pupils join at 13 in the Fourths, the school's name for Year 9, and progress through the Under School to a choice of A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form.
Charterhouse offers boarding and day places, and its pupils come from more than 40 countries. Boarders stay in school through the week and weekends, with the option of going home after Saturday sports fixtures and returning on Sunday evening. The calendar includes exeats and leave weekends, when pupils spend time away from school.
Every pupil belongs to one of 15 houses: eight for boys, five for girls and two co-educational. Each house has around 65 pupils from all five year groups, and each new pupil is paired with an older buddy. A Head of House lives on site with their family, house tutors meet each pupil in their group at least weekly, and a pastoral team provides care around the clock.
Boarders have evening and weekend activities as well as time for rest and study. Saturday evenings bring takeaway nights, films and socials with other houses, and Sundays begin with brunch, followed by swimming, badminton or the gym in the Sports Centre and shopping in Godalming. New international pupils also have an early outing to Hampton Court Palace.
Learning Support is offered on the basis of need rather than diagnosis, through drop-in sessions, short study skills courses and interventions in private study periods. Pupils can also use the Hunt Health Centre, the chaplaincy and a confidential Wellbeing Centre offering free sessions with counsellors and mental health practitioners, and the FutureU programme guides Sixth Formers towards universities in the UK, the US and Europe.
Every international boarder at Charterhouse must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Charterhouse website.
Charterhouse admits pupils at two points: 13+, for entry into the Fourths, and 16+, for the Sixth Form, where pupils choose between A Levels and the IB Diploma Programme. International boarders join in September, when more than 1,000 pupils arrive at the start of the academic year from around the world. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at Charterhouse, pupils who need help with English work with dedicated EAL teachers in one-to-one or small-group sessions, and the Learning Support team includes an EAL Co-ordinator and a learning mentor with responsibility for EAL.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Charterhouse is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and dedicated staff in the Admissions team give pupils who need a visa additional support and information, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Charterhouse requires every pupil to have a guardian in place at all times. The school does not publish a distance or age rule on its international pages, and British Guardianship confirms the school's specific requirements as part of placement. With exeats and leave weekends in each term, as well as half terms and holidays, international boarders need a reliable UK base away from school.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Charterhouse boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Charterhouse's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.
Whenever your child cannot stay at Charterhouse, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Charterhouse is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Charterhouse may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
