Learn More →King Edward's Witley is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18 at Witley, near Godalming in Surrey. Founded in the City of London in 1553, the school moved to Witley in 1865 and is run by its historic foundation, Bridewell Royal Hospital. Heathrow, Gatwick and London Waterloo are each about an hour away.
Pupils move from Queen Mary House in Years 7 and 8 to the Middle School for Years 9 to 11 and then the Sixth Form. Most take nine GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC and other Level 3 courses and the Extended Project Qualification. A one-year IGCSE Pre-Sixth course prepares international students aged 15 and 16 for the Sixth Form.
Around 100 pupils board, and international students from more than 30 countries make up about 15 per cent of the roll. Full boarders live at school seven days a week during term, apart from two exeat weekends each term. Weekly, flexi and occasional boarding are also offered.
There are eight boarding houses. Queen Mary House is a mixed house for Years 7 and 8, and six single-sex houses, four for boys and two for girls, take Years 9 to 12. Upper Sixth pupils move to Jubilee House, opened in 2022, with en-suite rooms, shared study spaces, a teaching kitchen and a garden. House parents lead each house with assistant house parents and matrons.
Boarders follow an activities programme every evening and at weekends, with house staff available at weekends to help with prep and music practice. House barbecues, pizza and film nights and inter-house competitions sit alongside trips to go-karting, ice skating, sporting events and London, with recent outings to Thorpe Park and the National Theatre.
Pastoral care runs through the house system, with tutors giving weekly academic feedback. A resident counsellor works with the pastoral team, nurses staff the Medical Centre around the clock, and Upper Sixth students have an evening tutor team in Jubilee House. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. International pupils come from more than 30 countries, including China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Germany, Spain and Ukraine. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The Pre-Sixth course is designed mainly for international students and concentrates on building spoken and written English alongside IGCSE study, through academic, scientific or creative pathways, with educational and cultural trips around the UK. Pre-Sixth students are supported by a coordinator, their house team and an academic tutor, and join Fifth Form pupils for co-curricular activities.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. King Edward's Witley is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies through its immigration partner once a place has been accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Overseas pupils at King Edward's Witley must have a guardian with a residential address in the UK. The guardian may be a relative or family friend, must be over 25 and must not live in student accommodation, and the school directs families to AEGIS accredited guardianship organisations.
