Christ's Hospital Overview

Christ's Hospital is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school near Horsham, West Sussex, for students aged 11 to 18. Founded by King Edward VI in 1552, it is a charitable foundation with a long tradition of means-tested support, and only around a fifth of students pay full fees. The campus has its own railway station, around 20 miles from London Gatwick.

Students take GCSEs and IGCSEs before three or four A Levels in the Sixth Form. A one-year Pre-Sixth Form Programme covers GCSE and IGCSE courses in mathematics, English, science, a language and one further subject, preparing students for A Level while they take full part in boarding life.

Boarding at Christ's Hospital

More than 800 full boarders live across 18 boarding houses, and international students make up around 14 percent of the school. Weekends follow a three-week cycle: every third weekend is a leave weekend, when most students go home or to guardians, and some houses stay open for those who cannot travel, especially overseas students.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Eight girls' and eight boys' houses take students aged 11 to 17, and Year 13 students move into two mixed Grecians houses for their final year. Each house has around 45 to 50 students and is led by a resident Houseparent with an Assistant Houseparent, three tutors and a resident Matron, with a member of staff always on duty. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

House staff supervise prep, eat meals with students and join them socially. Saturday mornings bring lessons, followed by sport and other activities, and Saturday evenings feature film nights, discos, talent shows and quizzes, with house activities on Wednesdays and trips to the theatre, cinema and bowling. Sundays are more relaxed.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department helps neurodivergent students and others with additional needs through study skills, specific learning programmes and emotional regulation strategies, using personalised student passports shared with teaching and boarding staff. Nurses staff the Health Centre around the clock, with doctors' surgeries five mornings a week and on-site dental clinics.

Every international boarder at Christ's Hospital must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Christ's Hospital

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Christ's Hospital website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Christ's Hospital admits most students at 11+, 13+ and 16+, and publishes English expectations for international entry from Year 7 to Year 12, with the Pre-Sixth Form Programme as a one-year route to A Level. Students join in September, and international students attend an introductory programme before term, receive a student mentor and are supported by an international student co-ordinator. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Christ's Hospital publishes guideline English levels on the IELTS scale for each year of entry, while noting that formal IELTS testing is not appropriate for younger applicants:

  • Year 7 (age 11): 4.5
  • Year 8 (age 12): 4.5 to 5.0
  • Year 9 (age 13): 5.5
  • Year 10 (age 14): 5.5 to 6.0
  • Year 11 (age 15): 6.0
  • Year 12 (age 16): above 6.0

Sixth Form applicants at level 6 or below may not be able to take every subject. On the Pre-Sixth Form Programme, students study English as a first or additional language according to their needs.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Christ's Hospital is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and manages Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies requests, including renewals, through a specialist visa partner. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Every international student must have a UK-based guardian, and families sign a guardianship agreement with the school. Christ's Hospital does not arrange or recommend guardians and refers families to AEGIS. Students must leave school at half terms and holidays, so the guardian's role in travel and accommodation is central.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Christ's Hospital boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Christ's Hospital's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Christ's Hospital, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Christ's Hospital is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Christ's Hospital may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
