Farlington School Overview

Farlington School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school at Strood Park, near Horsham in West Sussex, for pupils aged six months to 18. Founded in 1896 as a girls' school, it moved to its 33-acre parkland site, about 25 minutes by car from Gatwick Airport, in 1955 and began admitting boys in 2020. Farlington is part of Bellevue Education, a family of independent schools.

Pupils move through a Lower School, a Middle School and a Senior School for Years 9 to 13, taking GCSEs and then A Levels in the Sixth Form, where subjects include Design and Technology, Business and Drama and Theatre. International students can also take a one-year Pre-A Level course.

Boarding at Farlington School

Boarding is open to boys and girls from Year 7 to Year 13, and the boarding community includes a significant number of international students from many countries. Most boarders board full-time and return home only in the school holidays, while weekly boarders stay from Sunday to Friday and flexi boarders book one to three nights a week.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

All boarders live in the Jacobean Mansion House, with boys and girls in separate wings. Boarding is vertically integrated, so students mix across year groups. Rooms are a mix of single and shared. The house has common rooms, a communal kitchen and study spaces, and meals, laundry and health care are provided. An experienced boarding team, overseen by a Houseparent, provides round-the-clock residential care.

Boarding Life

Evenings include supervised study time, and the school runs a weekend programme of activities and trips for boarders. Outside lessons, boarders have exclusive use of the fitness suite, music practice rooms, study spaces and sports facilities, and weekend outings range from theatre and cinema visits to theme parks, kayaking and climbing. Students on the Pre-A Level course join the boarding trips every weekend.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Department plans a tailored programme of study for pupils who need additional help. Specialist EAL teachers work with international students in small groups and, where appropriate, one to one, and every overseas student is paired with a buddy. Sixth Formers receive help with academic writing and research, including the Extended Project Qualification.

Every international boarder at Farlington School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Farlington School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Farlington School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Farlington School accepts international boarders from Year 7 to Year 13. The main intake is in September, at the start of the three-term academic year, and all international students live in the boarding house alongside British boarders. Students aiming for the Sixth Form who need to strengthen their English can enter the one-year Pre-A Level course in September at age 15 or 16. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The Pre-A Level course requires at least CEFR B2. Specialist EAL teaching prepares students for IGCSE English as a Second Language, academic IELTS and the Cambridge English exams.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Farlington School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Farlington School requires an official UK-resident guardian for every student whose parents live overseas or spend long periods outside the UK. The guardian acts in place of the parents, attends events such as parent consultations and looks after the student during holidays when they do not travel home.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Farlington School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Farlington School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Farlington School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Farlington School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Farlington School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
