Learn More →Rikkyo School in England is a co-educational Japanese boarding school at Rudgwick, near Horsham in West Sussex. Founded in 1972 in Pallinghurst House, it educates around 180 pupils aged 10 to 18 across primary, middle school and high school sections, and every pupil boards. The school has a Christian foundation and close links with Rikkyo University and the Rikkyo schools in Japan.
Most lessons follow the Japanese National Curriculum and are taught by Japanese teachers, and the school is recognised by Japan's Ministry of Education as equivalent to a school in Japan, so graduates hold Japanese qualifications. British teachers lead English Communication lessons four times a week in small classes set by level, more subjects are taught in English in the high school, and pupils take an IGCSE course in science.
Rikkyo is a full boarding school: all pupils live on site through the week and at weekends during term. Pupils and staff live, eat and learn together as one community, and meals are shared with teachers. Admission does not depend on nationality or country of residence, and families live in Japan, the UK, elsewhere in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Pupils live in dormitories on the main campus, with duty teachers checking rooms each night. There are no single rooms: most rooms are shared by four to six pupils from the same year group, and pupils can use the chapel or a wellbeing room for quiet time.
Weekdays begin with courtyard exercise, breakfast and a chapel service before lessons. After clubs and dinner, pupils have homeroom and supervised self-study, with extra evening lessons for older students, and bedtimes rise with age. Friday afternoons are given to whole-school sport, clubs run on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, pupils can visit Cranleigh on Saturdays, and there are termly outings to Guildford, London, Oxford and Cambridge.
Teachers act as tutors and are available for questions during the day and in evening study sessions. The Health Centre is staffed by nurses with Japanese or UK qualifications and works with a local school doctor, and weekly counselling is offered in Japanese.
International boarders at Rikkyo School in England are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Rikkyo School in England website.
Rikkyo School in England follows the Japanese school year, which begins in April. The main entry points are the first year of middle school and the first year of high school, and transfer students can join at the start of any of the three terms, in April, September or January, subject to dormitory places. Because most teaching is in Japanese, the school suits students who can study in Japanese, whatever their nationality. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Rikkyo does not require a high level of English or an English qualification for entry, and looks instead for motivation. English is taught in classes grouped by level, with extra help for less confident students, and the school supports pupils preparing for Cambridge English, Eiken and IELTS examinations. British Guardianship can advise families on the English level that suits each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Rikkyo School in England is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and a visa officer at the school advises families on individual circumstances. The visa application itself is submitted by parents and usually takes more than a month to prepare. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
