Learn More →Holmewood House is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school in Langton Green, on the edge of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, for around 450 pupils aged 3 to 13. The school stands in 32 acres of grounds around a 19th-century house, with views across the Kent and Sussex countryside, and London is under an hour away by train. Founded in 1945 as a boys' preparatory school, Holmewood became fully co-educational during the 1990s.
Boarding is offered in the upper years of the Prep School, where specialist teachers cover every subject. Most pupils stay until 13 and move on to senior schools such as Tonbridge, Brighton College, Lancing, Sevenoaks and The King's School, Canterbury, with a smaller number leaving at 11.
Boarding is a small, close community of around 20 to 35 children, of whom roughly a dozen are full boarders, and about half of the full boarders come from overseas. Full boarding runs in blocks of around six weeks between half terms and suits families living abroad or serving in the armed forces. Weekly boarders stay from Sunday evening to Friday, and flexi boarding lets day pupils stay for occasional nights.
Boarders live on the first floor of the refurbished, Grade II listed Mansion House, whose renovation won a national boarding award. There are three boys' and three girls' dormitories, each self-contained and sleeping up to eight children with bunk beds and wardrobes. Children share with friends from their own year group. Houseparents and tutors provide daily care.
Boarders can take part in more than 120 co-curricular activities, from sport and music to robotics and creative arts. Weekends follow a structured programme on site, locally and further afield, including sports matches, baking, cinema and theatre visits and trips to the coast.
A specialist teacher and a team of learning support assistants work with pupils who have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, and the school also supports autism, speech and language needs and anxiety. Screening runs throughout the school, and EAL lessons are available in small groups or one to one. Wellbeing provision includes counselling, play therapy, mentoring and therapy dogs.
Every international boarder at Holmewood House must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Holmewood House website.
Holmewood House welcomes international boarders in the Prep School, and pupils aged 12 and 13 who hold a Child Student visa are expected to become full boarders. Younger international children aged 4 to 11 may instead attend as day pupils while living with a parent in the UK. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The school does not publish a minimum CEFR or IELTS level. Overseas pupils whose first language is not English are assessed before entry so the school can judge their level and needs, and it recommends an intensive English course before joining for children who are not yet fluent. EAL tuition is charged as an extra and given in small groups, one to one or as support in class. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Holmewood House is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with an immigration consultancy to issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Holmewood House requires parents living outside the UK to appoint a UK-based educational guardian accredited by AEGIS or the BSA, whatever the child's age. The guardian must speak English, must not be a member of school staff and must be reachable at any time in an emergency. The school is itself a member of AEGIS.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Holmewood House boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Holmewood House is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Holmewood House may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
