Learn More →Beechwood School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, educating pupils from 2 to 18, with a Senior School for Years 7 to 13. The school is centred on a Victorian mansion built in 1855 in the style of Osborne House, set in 23 acres of parkland less than an hour from London, and is a member of the Society of Heads. The school is part of Alpha Schools, an independent schools group founded in 2003.
Pupils follow Key Stage 3 and GCSE courses in small classes, and the Sixth Form offers two-year A Level courses with IELTS preparation and university guidance. A Sixth Form Foundation Year serves international students who need intensive English first.
Boarding is offered from Year 7 to Year 13, and the boarding community brings together students from the UK and a range of countries. Most boarders choose to stay at school at weekends, and they can visit friends or family with parental permission. Beechwood School offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request.
Students in Years 7 to 11 share two- or three-bedded rooms, while every Sixth Former has a single study bedroom with a washbasin. Modern shower rooms are close to the bedrooms, there are common rooms for different age groups, and boarders also use the Conservatory in the evenings and at weekends. Houseparents and experienced boarding staff are on hand to help.
After school activities, boarders return to their houses for supper and supervised study, with supervised study in the evenings and at weekends for students up to Year 11, while Sixth Formers learn to work independently. Weekend activities include outdoor pursuits, workshops, theatre trips and local visits, and outings have included Harry Potter World, Brighton's aquarium and pier and Go Ape.
The Learning Development team includes teachers trained in dyslexia, maths and speech and language support. Pupils are screened on entry, may receive individual lessons or directed study, and are assessed for exam access arrangements, while reading and spelling booster groups run before school and at lunchtime.

Alongside the main entry points, the school runs a pre-GCSE course in Year 9 and a Foundation Year for international Sixth Form students who need to strengthen their English before starting A Levels. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Overseas applicants normally complete the school's own English and mathematics assessments, and a report from their current school is also considered. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
EAL students receive specialist English lessons individually or in small groups, following tailored programmes that build reading, writing, listening and speaking. Extra Oral Communication lessons develop spoken confidence, some students take Speech and Drama leading to LAMDA exams, and Sixth Formers prepare for IELTS for university entry.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Beechwood School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
