Learn More →Ludgrove School is an independent boarding prep school for boys aged 8 to 13, set in 130 acres of grounds near Wokingham in rural Berkshire. Founded in 1892 in north London, the school moved to its present site in 1937, and all of its roughly 190 boys board.
Boys join in Year 4, known as Sixes, and stay until the end of Year 8. Classes are small, typically 9 to 15 boys, Latin starts in the second year, and older boys prepare for Common Entrance and senior school scholarship examinations. Around 70 per cent of leavers continue to Eton, with others going to schools such as Harrow and Radley. Facilities include an indoor pool and a nine-hole golf course.
All boys are full boarders. Under the fortnightly pattern, they spend alternate weekends in school and go home, or to a guardian, for an exeat on the weekends in between. Boarding is organised by year group, and a senior boy on a rota acts as a big brother to younger boarders.
Boys sleep in bright, spacious dormitories in the upstairs boarding areas, with a mix of single beds and bunk beds. Dormitories change each term so that boys get to know others across their year group. Houseparents living on site oversee the nightly duty staff, and a team of resident matrons looks after the boys' daily needs.
Lessons run into the late afternoon, with a rest period after lunch and afternoon games. After tea and supervised prep, bath and bedtimes are staggered by age, with board games and quiet reading before lights out. Thursday afternoons are kept for clubs such as climbing and cookery. Saturdays bring matches against other schools, and on Sundays in school the houseparents run a sweet shop for the boys.
Every boy is screened on arrival, and a learning support department of three specialist teachers sets up individual programmes where needed, with input from a visiting speech and language therapist and an occupational therapist. Division masters and mistresses meet their boys each morning. Three registered nurses run a surgery and sick bay, and a qualified counsellor visits weekly.
Every international boarder at Ludgrove School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Ludgrove School admits boys from overseas alongside UK pupils. The main entry point is Year 4, at around age 8, when most boys join; there is no Year 5 intake, and places in later years depend on availability and an academic assessment. Most international students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Boys whose first language is not English are assessed on entry, and the school arranges one-to-one EAL tuition until a boy can follow the classroom curriculum independently. Boys can also be prepared for recognised English examinations such as Cambridge First.
Boys coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Ludgrove School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and sponsors a small number of Child Student visas, so places for visa applicants are limited. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Ludgrove welcomes overseas pupils provided that they have a UK-based guardian and the right to study in the UK. With an exeat every other weekend, overseas boys need dependable guardian arrangements throughout the term as well as at half terms and holidays. International boys may use a phone at set times to contact home, as personal devices are otherwise not allowed.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Ludgrove School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
