Repton School Overview

Repton School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school in the village of Repton in south Derbyshire, close to Derby and Burton upon Trent. The senior school educates around 630 pupils aged 13 to 18, while Repton Prep takes children aged 3 to 13 on its own campus nearby. Founded in 1557, Repton is part of the Repton Family of Schools, a group of schools in the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and China.

Pupils join in Year 9 and follow a broad curriculum, including all three sciences, to GCSE. The Sixth Form offers 24 A Level subjects, the Extended Project Qualification and a Future Leaders programme, with a BTEC in Physical Education and a CTEC in Business as vocational options.

Boarding at Repton School

Repton describes itself as a full boarding school. Around 70 per cent of pupils board, more than 400 in total, and there are no weekly or flexi options. Day pupils belong to the same houses, so international students live alongside British classmates from the start.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are ten houses, six for boys and four for girls, each with around 60 pupils from every year group. Younger pupils normally share rooms of up to four, while Sixth Formers have single rooms or share with one other pupil. Each house is run by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a Matron, a resident tutor and house tutors, and takes formal meals together three times a day.

Boarding Life

Each house has five academic tutors who take turns on evening duty to support focused study. Saturday mornings are taught, with sports fixtures in the afternoon. On Sundays boarders attend chapel and can join optional trips to cinemas, theme parks or shopping centres, and the term includes house dinners, socials and inter-house competitions. Pupils may take a small number of privilege weekends each term alongside the calendared exeats.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Personalised Learning department screens all pupils in their first term and builds learning profiles for those with special educational needs, including assessment for exam access arrangements. The Health and Wellbeing Centre provides on-site healthcare and counselling, working with the chaplain and house staff alongside a structured PSHE programme.

Every international boarder at Repton School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Repton School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Repton School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Repton School admits international boarders at 13+ into Year 9, 14+ into Year 10 and 16+ into the Sixth Form, with the main intake in September. Younger children can start at Repton Prep and move up in Year 9. Each application is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Repton does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR levels. All new pupils are screened by the Personalised Learning team early in their first term, which helps staff identify any extra support a student needs.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Repton School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once an offer is accepted, working with a specialist immigration firm on the visa paperwork. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Repton requires every pupil whose parents live abroad, including Sixth Formers, to have a UK-based guardian before admission. The guardian must be over 25, a permanent UK resident who speaks fluent English, and live within three hours' travel of the school by car or public transport. Pupils stay with their guardian during exeats and half terms unless they travel home, and professional guardians must be accredited by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Repton School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Repton School's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Repton School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Repton School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Repton School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
