Marlborough House Vinehall Overview

Marlborough House Vinehall is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school at Mountfield, near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, for children aged 2 to 13. It has close to 300 pupils on a rural site of around 50 acres. The school was formed when Marlborough House School, founded in 1874 and later based at Hawkhurst, merged with Vinehall, founded in 1938, on the Vinehall site, and it is part of the Repton Family of Schools.

The Prep School teaches French throughout, adds Latin or Spanish from Year 6 and prepares pupils in Years 7 and 8 for Common Entrance and scholarships. Leavers move on at 13 to a wide range of senior schools, including Tonbridge, Benenden, Eastbourne College and Repton.

Boarding at Marlborough House Vinehall

Boarding is open to all Prep pupils, with full, weekly and flexi boarding available. Full boarding starts in Year 5, while younger pupils can try taster nights from Year 3. Around 20 children board, and the full boarders all come from overseas, mainly from Spain and China, alongside a small group of weekly boarders and local pupils who stay one or more nights a week.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in a single boarding house at the heart of the main school, with separate dormitories and washrooms for boys and girls. Two common rooms offer games, books, art materials and a television. The resident boarding lead lives in a flat at the centre of the house, supported by gap year students who act as older siblings to the boarders, and the school nurse and a dispensary are on hand.

Boarding Life

Boarding follows a structured routine, with shared mornings and bedtimes, supervised prep sessions and themed activity nights for all boarders. Evening options include ballet, cookery, judo, carpentry and swimming, and weekend trips are organised for boarders.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A Learning Support team provides small group or one-to-one help, individual support plans and exam access arrangements, and can draw on educational psychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists. Staff are trained to support pupils with dyslexia, autism, ADHD and speech and language difficulties. An EAL teacher works within the team, and a pastoral team and form tutors oversee wellbeing.

International boarders at Marlborough House Vinehall are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Marlborough House Vinehall accepts international boarders in the Prep School, with full boarding available from Year 5, age 9, through to Year 8, when pupils leave for senior school at 13. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. As a prep school with a small boarding community, it suits younger children who want a family-sized setting before moving on to a British senior school, and its Year 7 and 8 programme prepares pupils for Common Entrance and senior school scholarships. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish minimum English levels for international entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at the school, pupils who are learning English are supported by an EAL teacher who works within the Learning Support team, plans interventions with the English department and reviews each pupil's progress at regular staff meetings.

Child Student Visa

Pupils coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Marlborough House Vinehall is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, so it can sponsor eligible international boarders. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
