Roedean School Overview

Roedean School is an independent girls' day and boarding school in Brighton, East Sussex, educating girls aged 11 to 18. Founded in 1885, the school occupies a clifftop campus east of the city centre, between the South Downs National Park and the English Channel, and every boarding house looks out over the sea.

Girls follow GCSE and IGCSE courses before moving into a Sixth Form of more than 100 students, where around 30 A Level subjects are offered alongside the Extended Project Qualification. The Roedean Diploma, which begins in Year 7, takes every girl through a rotation of pastoral, academic and co-curricular activities.

Boarding at Roedean School

Boarding is central to life at Roedean, with around 300 boarders, most of them full boarders, and more than 260 girls on campus at weekends. Families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding, the last for up to three nights a week. British and international girls live side by side, and inspectors have described the multicultural boarding community as a distinctive feature of the school.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Roedean has five boarding houses. Houses One to Four each take girls from Year 7 to Year 12 in mixed-age communities, with junior boarders sharing bedrooms in separate wings of each house, while Keswick House is reserved for Year 13 and gives the oldest students greater independence before university. Sixth formers have single bedrooms with access to silent and collaborative study spaces. Each house has its own house team, available around the clock.

Boarding Life

Junior boarders follow an evening routine of supervised prep, weeknight activities and pastoral workshops. Full boarders stay on campus from Friday evening to Sunday, when the weekend programme includes visits to London museums and galleries, theatre trips, ice skating and seasonal outings. Older girls mentor younger boarders.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department works within the SEND Code of Practice, combining targeted small-group support, assistive technology and specialist assessment, with expertise in dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism and ADHD. Pastoral care is led by house staff together with Heads of Year and pastoral managers, supported by a health centre with a qualified nurse and access to counselling. Sixth Form students receive individual university and careers guidance.

International boarders at Roedean School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Roedean School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Roedean School welcomes international boarders into Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 and into the Sixth Form at Year 12. The main entry points are Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12, while places in Years 8 and 10 are considered when space allows. Most girls join in September, and boarding places are limited. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Roedean does not publish fixed CEFR or IELTS levels for each year of entry. Girls whose first or home language is not English complete an additional English assessment, and Sixth Form places also depend on meeting the school's A Level entry requirements. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Once at school, students who need extra help are supported by the English as an Additional Language department, which offers individual, shared or small-group lessons charged as an extra. Timetables can be adjusted so that English support runs alongside the wider curriculum.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Roedean School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Roedean School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination between Brighton and London Gatwick Airport, and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Roedean School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Roedean School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Roedean School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Roedean School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
