Kings Brighton Overview

Kings Brighton is an independent, co-educational day and boarding college in Brighton, East Sussex, for students aged 14 to 19. Its building on Ditchling Road stands at the edge of the city centre, about ten minutes' walk from Brighton railway station and fifteen from the seafront. The college is part of Kings Education, an international education group with colleges in Brighton, Bournemouth and Oxford.

Students take GCSEs as a pre-sixth form course and A Levels in subjects ranging from Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics to Politics, Psychology and Sociology, taught in small classes. Other routes to university include the UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, an International Business Foundation and Degree Pathway Programmes.

Boarding at Kings Brighton

More than 120 students attend, from many countries alongside local students, and close to 50 live in college accommodation or with host families. The residence operates throughout the year with Sunday arrivals and departures, so boarders stay in at weekends. Shorter residential stays are available through the Mini High School Programme.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Oxford Place, the on-site residence, fills the top two floors of the college building with single en-suite bedrooms, 29 on each floor, overseen by a live-in residential supervisor. Boarders share a lounge, snack kitchens and a laundry, and take breakfast and dinner on a half-board plan. The minimum age is 15: Kings places its youngest students with selected host families within walking distance, and students aged 18 and over can move to Pavilion Point, a residence two minutes away.

Boarding Life

Curfews are 9.30pm for under-16s and 10.30pm for students aged 16 to 18, and boarding staff carry out regular check-ins. Clubs include the Student Council, Kings Enterprise, debating, performing arts and photography, alongside the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and work experience. Weekend and full-day trips are organised, with optional two-night excursions to cities such as Paris and Amsterdam.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Each student has a Group Tutor, and a Director of Studies follows their progress from the first fortnight. University counsellors guide applications. The college has a SENCO, supported by a group Learning Support Coordinator, and a head of boarding works with a wellbeing team, with counsellors available during the week.

International boarders at Kings Brighton are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Kings Brighton accepts international students from age 14 onto GCSE and A Level programmes, foundation courses and Degree Pathway Programmes. Courses start in September or January, and places in the college residence are available from age 15. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Kings Education also runs an Academic English Preparation programme for students who need to strengthen their English before academic study.

Child Student Visa

Students from overseas aged under 18 will usually need a Child Student visa. Kings Brighton is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through Kings Education. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Kings does not make an education guardian compulsory for every student under 18: the need depends on where the student lives, and the college may require one where this is in the student's best interests. A guardian should live close enough to reach the student quickly in the event of illness or an emergency.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Kings Brighton boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the college, travel coordination and accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

The Mini High School Programme at Kings Brighton takes students aged 15 and over for four, six, seven or eight weeks, starting in September or January. Participants study English, Mathematics, IT, PE, Geography, a science and further subjects in classes of usually no more than 10, and can live in the college residence or with a host family. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Kings Brighton's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Kings Brighton, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Kings Brighton is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Kings Brighton may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
